ANKARA - EU Higher Commissioner for Joint Common Foreign Policy and Security Javier Solana is expected to come to Ankara this week to hold contacts.
Diplomatic sources said on Monday that the recent developments in the European Security and Defense Policy (ESDP) will be mainly taken up in the contacts of Solana at the Foreign Ministry.
The meeting of Solana, who is expected to come to Ankara on Nov. 14, with Justice and Development Party (AKP) leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan has not become certain yet.
EU took new decisions about ESDP in Brussels summit deciding that ESDP would not be used against any NATO country, in return NATO would not be used against any EU country and that operations against the rules of the U.N. Charter could not be launched.
Following this summit, Solana told in the meeting held with EU candidate countries in Copenhagen that he hoped serious politicians in Turkey to assess the Brussels proposal and that if necessary, he could go to Ankara to meet with Turkish officials about this issue.
Foreign Minister Sukru Sina Gurel said in his part that there were certain issues in Brussels document which made him uneasy and stressed that a regulation had to be made particularly to keep out the Greek Cypriot side from the decision making mechanism of ESDP.
Solana launches efforts to make concrete the mentioned document of ''compromise and cooperation'' before the NATO's Prague Summit to be held between 21-22 Nov.
