NEW YORK - Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Rauf Denktas can leave New York for TRNC on Tuesday if the drains on his body are removed.
TRNC Presidential Undersecretary Ergun Olgun told A.A correspondent on Thursday that Denktas, who underwent a health surgery in New York, was recovering day by day and he could depart New York on Tuesday.
Olgun said that Denktas would undergo a last health control on Friday. If the drains on his body are removed, Denktas and an accompanying delegation will depart from New York.
Meanwhile, United Nations (U.N.) Secretary General Kofi Annan's Special Envoy to Cyprus Alvaro De Soto continues contacts with TRNC officials in New York.
De Soto paid a quick recovery visit to Denktas and held a meeting with Olgun. Olgun later informed Denktas about the issues debated during their meeting.
In the meantime, it is noted that Annan continues work on Cyprus plan and that ''there are advantageous and disadvantageous elements for both the Turkish Cypriot and the Greek Cypriot sides in the plan.''
It is also stated that when and where the plan will be presented to the sides has not been definite yet.
U.N. sources said that the United States and Britain increased pressure on Annan to intensify efforts to find a solution to Cyprus question after the elections in Turkey ended.
The sources confirmed that U.S. President George Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair wrote Annan letters about Cyprus but did not give information about the content of the letters.
