ANKARA - Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Central Executive Board authorized on Tuesday AK Party leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan to choose the prime minister nominee.
AK Party deputy leader Abdullah Gul told reporters after the Central Executive Board meeting that their party drew a road map of Turkey's European Union (EU) membership and in this context, Foreign Ministry Undersecretary and Secretary General for the EU would brief them at 11.00 a.m. on Wednesday.
Gul said that they would meet ambassadors of EU member countries at a dinner on Wednesday.
Noting that Turkish Economic and Social Studies Foundation (TESEV) would give a briefing in AK Party headquarters on Thursday, Gul stated that they would meet representatives of some non-governmental organizations on Friday.
Gul pointed out that AK Party deputies would come to Ankara on Sunday.
They discussed who the prime minister would be during their meeting and the AK Party leader was authorized to choose the nominee, Gul said.
When a reporter said that the government appointed people to some high-level posts in recent days and asked what AK Party would do about these appointments when it came to the power, Gul said that such appointments did not coincide with political ethics.
Gul noted that making such important appointments under these conditions would contradict with political ethics and were not right.
''We would like to address the government: They have to be careful about these appointments and have to give this responsibility to the new government,'' Gul said.
When he was reminded about ''the statement of Erdogan in a television channel that they would take into consideraton the recommendations of the president about the prime minister,'' Gul said, ''the president cannot dictate. It is not right. Erdogan will pay a courtesy visit to the president. Of course, if this issue comes to the agenda during the meeting, they will debate it.''
Asked if the candidate prime minister would be chosen at the weekend, Gul said that they had to hold a series of meetings.
When he was reminded about the statement of Chief of General Staff about the election results that ''results are the wish of people'', Gul said, ''his words are right. We were pleased when we heard this. I am sure that Turkish people were also pleased. This is the national will and everybody should respect it. This is how it should be in a democratic country.''
Upon a question about the ''Belgian model'' proposed by the Cyprus question, Gul said, ''we said that the Belgian model can be a solution in Cyprus. In this model, there is a single state, but a single state model formed by two separate sovereignty. There is no doubt that the Foreign Ministry and experts will detail this issue. But, we want the solution of Cyprus question. We believe that Turkey has to make necessary initiatives about this issue. Of course, a solution should satisfy us. In this sense, we proposed Belgian model in our election declaration.''
