ANKARA - The result that the True Path Party (DYP) got in the elections caused debates within the party.
At the DYP Headquarters in Ankara, Nevzat Ceylan, a candidate from the DYP and former chairman of the DYP Headquarters in Ankara, called on DYP leader Tansu Ciller to ''step down'' while DYP deputy leader Nurhan Tekinel said, ''we failed to win votes that we expected to win, but the DYP has not been destroyed.''
Speaking to reporters, Tekinel said that election results had not become definite yet but Turkey's most serious institution Turkish Radio and Television (TRT) had already started to announce names and number of parliamentarians.
Tekinel said that they would lodge complaint against the TRT as even private television channels had not made any announcements about names and number of parliamentarians.
Tekinel said, ''we failed to get the result we expected. However, this mission which has served Turkish politics for long years has not been destroyed yet.''
Noting that the Democratic Left Party (DSP), the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and the Motherland Party (ANAP) which had won high rates of votes in general elections in 1999 faded away, Tekinel said that even commentators on television channels defined the rate of votes that a political party of which leader was politically banned, won as ''surprising''.
''The DYP will remain in the Turkish politics in early elections to be held and it will continue to serve its country,'' Tekinel said.
Replying questions, Tekinel defended that election results would not affect the DYP's future.
Meanwhile, Nevzat Ceylan told a press conference at the DYP Headquarters that today's result stemmed from DYP leader's Ciller's mistakes.
''I am holding this press conference because Mrs. Ciller has not yet resigned as the DYP leader. Now, we need a new leader,'' he added.
