ANKARA - Democratic Left Party (DSP) leader, and Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said on Saturday that certain parties promised things to people which can't be fulfilled by them.
Addressing people in Tandogan Square in Ankara in an open air meeting organized by his party, Ecevit said that ''Ankara is the essence of this state. The foundations of the secular and democratic Republic was laid by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in Ankara. It is the mission of people in Ankara to protect and strengethen the characters of this state. In this respect people in Ankara should vote for DSP.''
Production increased and the closed factories started to reopen, said Ecevit and noted that unemployment decreased, tourism started to develop and agriculture started to strengethen during their government.
The Job Assurance Law was adopted and temporary workers were taken as permanent personnel, said Ecevit and noted that the social rights of employees also improved during their government.
Ecevit said that the corruption ended, a heavy blow was struck on the separatist and religious terrorism, and secularism which respects beliefs strengthened during the government led by DSP.
Those who couldn't adapt the DSP culture left the party and the DSP is stronger now, said Ecevit and noted that ''I will not immediately give up the leadership after the elections. After holding our congress, a new administration will come to power in DSP.''
While listening to Ecevit, people in the meeting shouted slogans saying ''Turkey is secular and it will remain secular.''
Noting that Turkey was suffering from the economic problems when they took over the government in 1999, Ecevit said that the parliament has worked very hard to revive the economy for three and a half years and passed 384 laws.
Ecevit said that DSP's power was the guarantee of Turkey and added that a powerful, secular and democratic Turkey would open the way of EU.
Stating that the power of DSP and Turkey would increase Turkish Cypriots' resistance, he said, ''some people say that Turkey should give up Cyprus to end the problems. But Turkey cannot give up the Northern Cyprus. Because it is the territory of Turkey. No one can violate the rights of Turkish Cypriots, when DSP is in political power. Turkey is the guarantee of internal and external peace in the administration of DSP.''
