German Die Zeit newspaper claimed that the view of giving ''half membership'' to Turkey became influential in the European Union (EU). The newspaper alleged that it was thought of finding a formula for Turkey that is above the candidacy but below full membership.
The article in the newspaper said the United States put pressure for Turkey's EU full membership, and that to this end German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder wanted a timetable to be set for Turkey at Copenhagen Summit. The article said if the Europeans would set a real date, this will be fairly in the far future, that nobody will understand anything. If an unreal date is set, this will cause disappointment in Turkey in a short time.

CALLING CARD SHOCK
As Foreign Ministry Spokesman Yusuf Buluc told a weekly news conference that Chechen Republic-Ickeria Representation, which Russia wanted to be banned saying they supported terrorists, did not exist in Turkey, but the CNN Turk journalist showed a calling card belonging to this organization.
An interesting development happened in Chechen polemics between Turkey and Russia on Thursday. Russia gave a note to Turkey yesterday and wanted the organization, called Chechen Republic-Ickeria Representation, to be banned. Buluc said such an organization did not exist in Turkey, but the CNN Turk journalist showed a calling card belonging to this organization.
A representative of the organization had visited CNN Turk when the theatre raid in Moscow started, and gave a video cassette of the Chechen activists together with the calling card.
The calling card belonged to Badrudin Zelimhan Arslangereyev, responsible for Public Relations and Information of the Chechen Republic-Ickeria Turkey and the Middle East General Representation.
Hurriyet investigated the address written in the card. The address was a flat which was evacuated 6 months earlier. The telephone numbers written in the card were not answering either.

THIS ARGUMENT WILL NOT END
As Justice and Development Party (AK Party) leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan says ''we don't have the problem for prime ministry'', an argument erupted for regulations in his party. Candidates who interpreted the regulations for themselves, started to launch lobby activities for prime ministry candidacy.
At the same date when Higher Election Board (YSK) announced that Erdogan could not run his candidacy for deputyship, Ertugrul Yalcinbayir, the AK Party Secretary General, pointed out that, ''according to our regulations, Abdullah Gul comes after the leader''. But later Yalcinbayir stepped back because of the arguments.
When name of Gul, who chairs the party Central Executive Board during Erdogan's absence, is put forward, names like Bulent Arinc and Abdullatif Sener started lobby activities.
Following those arguments Yalcinbayir said there might be regulatory changes regarding candidacy.

DIONYSOS STATUE TO BE GIVEN BACK TO TURKEY
Turkey won the legal fight against Britain for bringing back the bronze Dionysos Statue, belonging to 200 B.C. Hellenistic era.
The bronze statue which was under protection in the British Cadogan Tate gallery was delivered to officials in Turkish Embassy in London.
The bronze statue was proved to be smuggled from Turkey and the judge decided on October 16 that the bronze statue should be brought back to Turkey. The statue was found in a depot belonging to Nevzat Telliagaoglu in Switzerland.
The statute was seized by Swiss authorities and later it was handed over to Britain under condition of ''sending it back to its motherland''.

ECEVIT WILL BE ON DUTY
Prime Minister and leader of the Democratic Left Party (DSP) Bulent Ecevit said he would stay in office for sometime more because of the concerns of people for Justice and Development Party (AK Party). Ecevit said he would not leave his post after the elections, pointing out the danger for secularism and regime that may occur after November 4.
Ecevit held a news conference and said, ''I am in a position to hand over the leadership to my friends without any hesitation. However, my withdrawal from the leadership immediately is out of question.''
Ecevit said, ''most of the people look at the atmosphere after elections with concern. Those who consider secular and democratic regime in danger have concerns. Some, while addressing to people, are giving promises without properly planning it out beforehand. They hide their actual intentions.
Ecevit supported the attitude of President Ahmet Necdet Sezer toward Justice and AK Party. Responding to a question about the results of elections, Ecevit said, ''it is very difficult to estimate what kind of an atmosphere will be set up in the parliament. There are parties hiding their intentions. AK Party is one of them. I hope parties will protect secular and democratic principles.''

AKBANK SIGNS LOAN AGREEMENT WORTH OF USD 55 MILLION WITH IFC
Akbank signed a loan agreement worth of 55 million U.S. dollars with International Finance Corporation (IFC) within the scope of 200-240 million U.S. dollars of a long term project finance.
Releasing a statement, Akbank said that the loan which was a part of 7-year project finance was provided from IFC's own resources.

EU TROIKA GIVES HOPE TO TURKEY
The European Union (EU) Troika, comprised of EU Term President Denmark, EU's next term President Greece, and EU Commission representatives gave positive signals to Turkey. EU delegation said that the steps which Turkey has taken were very pleasing and wanted Turkey to attribute utmost importance to the implementation of laws for fighting against torture. A diplomat said that the meeting on Turkey-EU relations was very beneficial.

FANS OVERSHADOW FRIENDSHIP
Fenerbahce and Panathinaikos fans threw fragments of seats, plastic bottles and other objects at each other prior to their teams' UEFA Cup second round first leg at Sukru Saracoglu Stadium in Istanbul. A number of Greek fans were slightly injured by flying objects after they unfurled Fenerbahce's rivals Galatasaray's flags. Meanwhile, a delegation including Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Sukru Sina Gurel and Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou cut short their walk around the touchline when Greek fans threw plastic bottles and other objects at them.

AK PARTY SECRETARY GENERAL YALCINBAYIR SAYS PRESIDENT SEZER WAS A PERSON WHO WOULD IMPLEMENT DEMOCRATIC PRACTICES IN BEST WAY
Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Secretary General Ertugrul Yalcinbayir said related to President Ahmet Necdet Sezer's statement on how a prime minister would be determined that Sezer was the person who would implement the democratic practices in the best way. Yalcinbayir who responded the questions said that everyone was depended on the practices in Turkey and stated that the leader of a political party could be different from the prime minister. He added that the government was an institution different from the party.

OZTRAK: ''ECONOMIC PROGRAMME IS GOING WELL, THERE IS NO NEED FOR NEW PROGRAMME''
Treasury Undersecretary Faik Oztrak said that the economic programme which was being implemented in Turkey was going well and added that there was no need for a new programme. Delivering a speech on ''Turkey's Debt Dynamics'' at Ankara University Political Sciences Faculty, Oztrak said that Turkey's final aim was to grow and provide employment. Noting that the economic programme should be implemented with determination and discipline in 2003, Oztrak said that the non-interest surplus should be 6.5 percent and inflation should be decreased.

SUPPORT FOR AK PARTY
The United States has said that it was against closure of political parties which put forward their opinions democratically and peacefully. When recalled of closure case against the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) during a press conference, U.S. State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said that the United States was against closure of political parties which put forward their opinions democratically and peacefully. They supported democracy and broad political participation in Turkey and in other countries, Boucher said and added that they believed that democracy was successful when there was free and open debate and this was valid also for elections.

BAHCELI WANTS ERDOGAN NOT TO CREATE TENSION IN POLITICS
Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahceli who criticized Justice and Development Party (AK Party) leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Erdogan caused tension in the agenda of Turkey. Bahceli who addressed people in public meetings in Kahramanmaras and Gaziantep said that two political parties could pass the threshold according to some surveys, but the prime minister of one of them was not even definite.

TURKISH UNIT OF ISAF RESTORES AFGHAN MOSQUE
Turkish unit under the auspices of International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) has restored the oldest mosque in Kabul, Afghanistan. ISAF Commander Hilmi Akin Zorlu who delivered a speech in the opening of the mosque said that the mosque is one of the most beautiful, historical and central mosques in Kabul, besides its cultural value. Noting that the restoration is the first completed civilian and military joint project of ISAF in religious and cultural field, Zorlu said that they repaired the mosque by Turkey's financial opportunities and had to bring some material from Turkey by plane. The restoration cost 75 thousand dollars.
BOSCH TURKEY GETS EUROPEAN QUALITY SUCCESS AWARD
Bosch's plant in Bursa province was selected to receive European Quality Success Award. Bosch Industry and Trade Inc. Director General Klaus Peter Fouquet received the award from Spanish Princess Infanta Dona Christina at the ceremony which was held in Barcelona.
