Ekrem Akurgal, Doyen Of Archeology World, Dies

IZMIR - Prof. Dr. Ekrem Akurgal, the Doyen of Archeology world, died in his house in Karsiyaka Township in Aegean Izmir province.
Akurgal, who has been under medical treatment for some time, died early on Friday morning.
A funeral will take place for Akurgal on Saturday.
Akurgal was born in 1911 in Tulkarem township in Haifa. Akurgal had moved to Istanbul together with his family when he was a child. As he had been getting education in Istanbul Faculty of Law, he got an archeology scholarship and left for Germany in 1932.
He got classical archeology lessons from archeologist Gerhart Rodenwaldt still 1940 in Berlin University.
Akurgal had set up an archeology library by classifying the published books related to Anatolian archeology. Akurgal started excavations in 1948.
Akurgal was given many awards like Goethe Medal, I Cavalli d'Oro di San Marco award and Legion d'honneur medal.
