''I WILL DESIGNATE THE PRIME MINISTER, NOT ERDOGAN''
President Ahmet Necdet Sezer reacted to Justice and Development Party (AK Party) leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and said, ''prime minister is designated by the President, not by the leader of a political party who is not even a deputy.'' Last week, Erdogan said in a news programme that if they came into the power following the general elections on November 3, 2002, they would choose the prime minister in accordance with AK Party by-law. In response, President Sezer stressed that the President had the authority to designate the new prime minister.

YILMAZ: ''THE EU WILL GIVE TURKEY A CONDITIONAL DATE''
State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz, who also acts as leader of the Motherland Party (ANAP), met with European Union Commissioner Guenter Verheugen for enlargement in Brussels. Yilmaz said, ''the EU will set a date for the opening of accession negotiations with Turkey conditionally. However, I want to stress that there is an atmosphere in the EU in favor of us.''

GENERAL OZKOK: ''POLITICIANS WILL TAKE THE DECISION''
General Staff Chief General Hilmi Ozkok attended the reception hosted at the Cankaya Presidential Palace on the occasion of the 79th anniversary of foundation of the Republic of Turkey. When asked by reporters whether or not Turkey would increase number of its soldiers in Northern Iraq, General Ozkok said, ''we are soldiers. Such a development entails a political decision. Our politicians will take this decision.''

WAR VETERANS MEET AFTER YEARS
A total of 24 veterans from the United States who were injured during the wars in Korea and Vietnam, came to Turkey with their wives. They met with their Turkish brothers in arms at the Turkish War Veterans' Association. Meanwhile, American-Turkish War Veterans' Association Chairman William Ali met with his brother in arm Hekim Gultekin after long years. Ali said that they had been taken prisoner in the Korean War, and Gultekin had saved his live.

BAHCELI: ''IF WE HAD THE POWER, WE WOULD HAVE HANGED OCALAN''
State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Devlet Bahceli who also acts as leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), said, if we had the power, we would have hanged Abdullah Ocalan, the head of terrorist organization PKK.'' Speaking at a rally in central province of Yozgat, Bahceli responded to criticisms about the decision to commute Ocalan's death sentence to life imprisonment.

Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer of Germany said, ''we should keep the door of the European Union (EU) open for modern and secular Turkey that has been progressing in line with reforms of Ataturk. Our closing the door will be beneficial for extreme Islamists.''

YILMAZ: ''WE EXPECT GOOD NEWS FROM COPENHAGEN''
State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz, who also acts as leader of the Motherland Party (ANAP), said, ''if the new government is formed quickly, an important step will possibly be taken at the European Union (EU) summit in Copenhagen in December.''

79TH FOUNDATION ANNIVERSARY OF TURKISH REPUBLIC
The 79th foundation anniversary of the Turkish Republic is celebrated in the whole country, representations abroad and in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) with ceremonies. Istanbul Governor Erol Cakir, the First Army Commander General Cetin Dogan and Mayor Ali Mufit Gurtuna, Deputy Parliament Speaker Murat Sokmenoglu, some deputies from Istanbul, State Security Court Prosecutor Aykut Cengiz Engin, Security Director Hasan Ozdemir and military officials attended the ceremony which was held for the foundation of Turkish Republic in Vatan Street in Istanbul.

GALATASARAY BEATEN BY LOKOMOTIV MOSCOW
Galatasaray was beaten 1-2 by Locomotiv Moscow of Russia in Group H in European Champions League on Tuesday. Galatasaray can qualify to the second round if it defeats Barcelona and the match between Brugge and Lokomotiv Moscow ends in a tie.

The first ceremony was held in Ataturk's Mausoleum (Anitkabir) for the celebrations of 79th foundation anniversary of Turkish Republic. The delegation headed by President Ahmet Necdet Sezer laid a wreath to the mausoleum and observed a minute of silence. Signing the Special Book of the Mausoleum, Sezer said that ''our nation will never give concessions from Ataturk's principles, reforms and the aim of modernization and it mill make the Republic live forever with its institutions and rules.'' President Sezer, Parliament Speaker Omer Izgi, Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, Chief of General Staff Gen. Hilmi Ozkok, Deputy Prime Minister and MHP leader Devlet Bahceli, Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Sukru Sina Gurel, Constitution Court Chairman Mustafa Bumin, ministers, commanders, DYP leader Tansu Ciller, SP leader Recai Kutan, AK Party leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan, CHP leader Deniz Baykal, Ankara governor Yahya Gur, Ankara mayor Melih Gokcek and other officials attended the ceremony.

BUSINESSMEN WANT TO ENTER PARLIAMENT
The businessmen who want to solve their problems at the parliament became the deputy candidates from the political parties. A total of 107 businessmen from Republican People's Party (CHP), 74 businessmen from Justice and Development Party (AK Party), 49 businessmen from Motherland Party (ANAP) and 42 businessmen from True Path Party (DYP) became the deputy candidates for the November 3 elections.

Deputy Prime Minister and State Minister Mesut Yilmaz said that the atmosphere in the EU was to the advantage of Turkey. Yýlmaz, who attended in the European Convention meetings in Brussels, had a meeting which lasted for about an hour with EU Commissioner for Enlargement Guenter Verheugen. Yilmaz said, ''I think that a decision about Turkey's negotiation date for its membership to the Union will be taken at Copenhagen Summit. It doesn't mean that a negotiation date will be given to Turkey definitely at the summit, but a conditional date can be given. The election results and performance of the government which will be formed after November 3 elections can influence positively this decision.''

MHP LEADER BAHCELI ADDRESSES PEOPLE IN YOZGAT
Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader, State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Devlet Bahceli addressed people in a public meeting organized by his party in central Yozgat province. Congratulating first the 79th foundation anniversary of the Turkish Republic, Bahceli said that the coalition government shared the realities in economy and other fields with people realistically for the first time. Noting that the economic crisis has to be overcome completely, Bahceli said that the crisis could not go on like that and if it continues, citizens can be in more difficult conditions.

PRESIDENT SEZER: ''I DECIDE WHO WILL BE PRIME MINISTER, NOT SOMEONE ELSE''
President Ahmet Necdet Sezer said that he had the right to decide who would be the prime minister in accordance with the Constitution. Sezer responded the questions of the reporters at October 29 reception which was held for the 79th foundation anniversary of Turkish Republic. Sezer mostly faced with the questions related to the election of the prime minister, stressing that the president should act in accordance with the Constitution. President Sezer said, ''a political party leader who I will choose as prime minister should be a deputy in accordance with the Constitution.''
