NEW YORK - Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Rauf Denktas, who had a heart surgery on October 7 in New York, is getting better.
Cetin Erol, who is one of the doctors of Denktas, told the A.A correspondent on Wednesday that Denktas's health condition was good and added that he would undergo a last check-up on Friday. He said that Denktas could go to his country next week.
TRNC Presidential Office Undersecretary Ergun Olgun said that TRNC President Denktas could return to the island next week and recalled that the doctors wanted Denktas to start working and negotiations on Cyprus issue not earlier than eight weeks after the heart surgery on October 7.
Olgun said that he could give the necessary instruction for the joint committee, which was formed between the two sides during the talks with Greek Cypriot side, to start working if TRNC President Denktas found acceptable, stating that the U.N. Secretary General's special representative to Cyprus Alvaro De Soto would come to New York at the weekend after his contacts in Ankara and Athens. Olgun added that he and De Soto would have a meeting and stated that De Soto would pay a visit to President Denktas.
Denktas had a heart surgery in New York on October 7. He underwent another surgery due to an unexpected complications. A team headed by world-famous Turkish doctor Mehmet Oz operated on Denktas at New York Presbytarian Hospital.
