Appeal Hearing Of Former Sisli Mayor Ends In London

LONDON - The appeal hearing of Gulay Cokay, the former Sisli mayor of Istanbul within the scope of her extradition case ended on Tuesday. British judges are expected to announce their decision soon.
If the judges of the Higher Court in London decide to extradite Cokay to Turkey, the approval of the British Secretary of State for the Home Office David Blunkett is necessary for the decision to be implemented.
The issue whether or not there were political considerations behind the accusations of Cokay for corruption was discussed in the hearing today.
The British attorney general who represents Turkey in the case, said that the former Sisli mayor was tried for getting involved in corruption during her term in office. Cokay's lawyer denied the accusations on Cokay.
This hearing was the last one in the legal process that started with the detention of Cokay in London in December, 1999.
