E.U. Summit For Candidate Countries Starts In Copenhagen

COPENHAGEN - The meeting held by EU Term President Denmark to give information to EU candidate countries about the decisions taken in EU Brussels summit started in Copenhagen on Monday.
President Ahmet Necdet Sezer and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sukru Sina Gurel attend the meeting.
Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen will give information to 13 candidate countries including Turkey about the financement of the EU enlargement and the financial aid that will be given to countries within this scope.
After the meeting of Rasmussen with the leaders of candidate countries, a luncheon will be hosted.
Danish Foreign Minister Per Stig Moller will meet with foreign ministers of candidate countries in a different luncheon.
Sezer will assess the recent situation in Turkey-EU relations in his bilateral meeting with Rasmussen. Sezer will ask EU to give a date for full membership negotiations in Copenhagen summit during the meeting and give the message that Turkey's membership will contribute significantly to EU's becoming a global power.
Danish Prime Minister Rasmussen will hold a joint news conference together with EU Commission Chairman Romano Prodi, the EU Commissioner for Enlargement Guenter Verheugen, and EU High Commissioner for Foreign Policy and Joint Defense Javier Solana following a working luncheon together with the leaders of 13 candidate countries.
EU is also expected to bring onto agenda the last proposal presented to Turkey about the European Security and Defense Policy (ESDP).
Solana, who addressed the EU Brussels Summit, said they wanted to solve the problem not only with one country but through talks that would take place with NATO, stressing that they expected Turkey to show understanding in this respect. Solana said they would discuss the issue with the Turkish officials during the meeting that would take place in Copenhagen.
During the summit held in Brussels, it was pointed out that ESDP could not be used against any NATO country, and it was also pointed out that NATO could not be used against any EU member. It was also stated that operations contradicting with the principles of the U.N. Charter could not be launched.
Foreign Minister Sukru Sina Gurel, who spoke to press on Sunday, pointed out that there were some issues causing uneasiness for Turkey, stressing that an arrangement should be done which will exclude Greek Cypriot side from decision-taking mechanism of the ESDP.
