BERLIN - German Union 90/Greens Party Co-Chairman Claudia Roth said on Tuesday that her party has always supported the EU membership of Turkey within the scope of Copenhagen criteria.
Speaking to Turkish journalists, Roth said that they won't give up the decision given by the German coalition government that 'if Turkey fulfills the Copenhagen criteria, it must be a member of the EU.'
''As EU Commissioner for Enlargement Guenter Verheugen also said, if Turkey fulfills the conditions, it will certainly be accepted to the EU. When Turkey fulfills the conditions, Turkey's membership can't be prevented, but Turkish politicians should also be resolved in this issue,'' she said.
Denying the news published in the Turkish press saying that a crisis emerged between the coalition parties in Germany regarding Turkey's membership to the EU, Roth said that the human rights advocates in Greens Party also support Turkey's membership to the EU thinking that this will cause more positive developments in Turkey.
When asked if their policy on Turkey would change according to the party that would come to power in Turkey after Nov. 3 elections, Roth said that ''no, our policy on EU membership of Turkey won't change, but the EU policy of parties is important.''
Roth added that she would spend her vacation in Antalya, Turkey between October 30-November 3.
