ANKARA - National Security Council (NSC) said on Tuesday that ''Turkey expected Iraq to show a responsible attitude by implementing the U.N. Security Council resolutions that will end the necessity of a military intervention and that the principles of international law and consensus have to be respected in the steps to be taken in this issue.''
NSC Secretariat General said in a written statement after the regular meeting of NSC held in Presidential Place under the leadership of President Ahmet Necdet Sezer that internal and international developments which affect the security and order of Turkey were reviewed in the meeting.
''Recent developments about Iraq were taken up, the expectation from Iraq to show a responsible attitude by implementing the U.N. Security Council resolutions that will end the necessity of a military intervention, the need to monitor the issue on the basis of the U.N. and to respect principles of international law and consensus were voiced in the meeting and it was decided that Turkey would continue to monitor the developments in line with its sensitivities during the meeting,'' it was noted.
''The EU's Progress Report dated October 9, 2002 was evaluated and the members of NSC confirmed the expectation of Turkish people to get a negotiation date from the EU during the Copenhagen summit to be held between 12-13 December, 2002. Moreover the economic and administrative activities that would be carried out in the region after the end of the emergency rule in Diyarbakir and Sirnak provinces as of November 30, 2002 were discussed in the meeting,'' it was noted.
