WASHINGTON D.C. - U.S. House of Representatives adopted on Monday a resolution which praised the cooperation of Turkey in the fight with terrorism, its support to the U.S. operation in Afghanistan and the economic reforms in Turkey.
The draft noted that Turkey, as a long term ally of the U.S. shared the common goal of maintaining global peace and stability, demonstrated a steadfast commitment to the fight on terrorism and it was the first Muslim country which ensured direct military support to the Enduring Freedom Operation in Afghanistan.
Noting that the war planes which took off from Incirlik base contributed significantly to the operations in Afghanistan, the resolution recalled that Turkey got the command of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan.
The resolution noted that Turkey has faced financial and currency crises and recession in 2000 and 2001, adding ''Turkey's fiscal discipline and actions to restore confidence in the banking system have laid the foundation for an economic recovery in Turkey. The future growth and prosperity of Turkey depend in large measure on encouraging more foreign investment in Turkey and improving trade relations; and the United States is interested in building a broader investment and trading relationship with Turkey. The U.S. commends Turkey for implementing economic reforms, particularly those which increase privatization and improve the investment climate in Turkey.''
The resolution also noted that Turkey immediately condemned the terrorist attacks against the United States that occurred on September 11, 2001; and that it increased force protection for United States military personnel and equipment in Turkey.
