ANKARA - Trade volume in free zones reached 6 billion 748.4 million U.S. dollars in the first eight months of this year.
According to figures of the Foreign Trade Undersecretariat's General Directorate for Free Zones, Istanbul Leather and Industry Zone became the free zone which made the most trade in January-August 2002 period with 1.7 billion U.S. dollars.
Istanbul Ataturk Airport Free Zone followed Istanbul Leather and Industry Zone with 1.5 billion U.S. dollars and Aegean Free Zone was ranked the third with 1.1 billion U.S. dollars.
The free zones made the most trade with Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries in the first eight months. The European Union (EU) countries and other OECD countries became the second and third among trade partners of free zones.
