Manisa Case - Police Officials To Apply To E.C.H.R.

MANISA - The lawyers of the police officials who were tried for torturing young persons in the case, known as ''Manisa Case'' said on Wednesday that the state has to protect its civil servants.
The police officials who were imprisoned for torturing the youngsters said that they would apply to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).
Following the hearing held at Manisa heavy criminal court, the lawyers of the suspects said that they would resort to all legal ways against the decision of Manisa Criminal Court. Lawyers recalled that the suspects were earlier acquitted.
The suspects said in their part that they would also apply to the Supreme Court of Appeals.
Tight security measures were taken in the hearing. Domestic and foreign press organs showed great interest in the hearing. There were also German Consul General to Izmir Ralp Breth and British Consul General to Ankara Songeeta Ahuja among the persons who watched the hearing.
Breth said in his part that the case was important for the EU, adding ''we are not parties to this case, we only came here to watch it. We will submit a report about the hearing to our own ministry.''
Manisa High Criminal Court sentenced one police chief and ten policemen to imprisonment terms changing between 60-130 months the same day.
