ISTANBUL - U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan's Cyprus Special Envoy Alvaro De Soto said on Wednesday that he believed that an agreement could be reached in Cyprus before the Copenhagen Summit, stressing that everybody should be in cooperation in this direction.
De Soto responded to the questions of reporters at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport.
De Soto he earlier had contacts with the representatives of foreign ministry, noting he decided to visit Turkey again as a result of those contacts.
De Soto said it was not an unexpected visit, adding that they wanted to be in continuous contact with the sides. De Soto said he would often visit Turkey in the coming months in this respect.
When a journalist said, ''Copenhagen Summit approaches. Do you see any hope in solution of Cyprus question,'' De Soto said he believed that an agreement could be reached before Copenhagen Summit. He said this should improve in this way, and this is what the Secretary General hopes to happen.
De Soto said they hoped that everybody would be in cooperation in this respect, stressing that, ''Let's concentrate on it before Copenhagen.''
When asked what would be the conditions of the agreement, De Soto said he did not want to enter into details.
De Soto said details of the agreement would be determined with direct consultations, and that concerned governments would decide for that. He said he did not want to make a statement on the issue through press.
Responding to a question how he considered current situation, De Soto said he thought this was an opportunity, and that he hoped the opportunities would be evaluated. De Soto said he thought this would be for the benefit of everybody, stressing that particularly the solution of sovereignty problem would be for the benefit of everybody.
De Soto said they also believed that an agreement could be reached at the same time, noting that such an agreement would be appropriate to the interests and targets of everybody.
Responding to a question about the two technical committees which was decided to be set up on Cyprus issue, De Soto said those committees could not be established yet, but that this would take place soon.
De Soto later left for Ankara.
