Broadcast In Mother Tongue

ANKARA - Supreme Board of Radio and Television (RTUK) carries out three-way work on broadcasting in mother tongue.
RTUK is working on three separate draft regulations regarded with broadcasting in mother tongue only by the state-run Turkish Radio and Television (TRT) or voluntary institutions in ''national'' and ''local'' dimensions.
According to the drafts which RTUK is working on, the television channels will make broadcasting only two hours a day in a week and the radios will make broadcasting one day within a week and one day in the weekend. It will not be more than six hours.
RTUK convened today to discuss broadcasting in mother tongue.
RTUK which examined draft regulations arranged under the name, ''Broadcasting in Different Languages and Dialects used by Turkish Citizens Traditionally in Daily Life'', decided to examine the position of RTUK, which does not have the authority to supervise TRT in case broadcasting in mother tongue is made by TRT.
Meanwhile, TRT stated to RTUK regarding broadcasting in mother tongue that under the Law no:2954 on TRT, it was impossible for them to make broadcasting in Kurdish or in some other languages.
According to the arrangements in drafts in question, all the programmes that would be made in mother tongue, would be broadcast with subtitles in Turkish. Television and radio institutions would be able to make application only for one language or dialect.
The Secretariat General for the EU, which conveyed its view to RTUK regarded with the broadcasting in mother tongue, said facilities should be given to every kind of institution to make private, local and national broadcasting. It advised implementation in France to be considered in this respect.
