BOLU - Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader, State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Devlet Bahceli said on Saturday that ''we should estimate how the independent state that is tried to be founded in Northern Iraq could cause trouble for Turkey in the future. We should not permit the formation of such a state.''
Bahceli said that EU's telling Turkey that 'if these parties come to power, we won't give you a negotiation date' means putting embargo on the Turkish national will before Turkey's joining the EU.'
Addressing a public meeting held by his party in northwestern Bolu province, Bahceli said that elections are not held in their regular periods since 1987 and he criticized this practice. ''If a period of five years is considered as a long period of time, it will be better to decrease this period,'' said Bahceli.
Bahceli asserted that despite the economic crises in November 2000 and February 2001, there was no political chaos in Turkey.
Speaking on Turkey-EU relations, Bahceli said that the EU failed to give a date to Turkey to start membership negotiations. Criticizing the EU for telling Turkey what kind of a government they prefer to be set up on Nov. 3, Bahceli said ''This is a free and an independent country.''
The MHP leader said that improving relations with the EU and becoming an EU member was Turkey's state policy and supported by all political parties and added ''But we cannot accept them to dictate us what government to elect to be given a date. This would be imposing sanctions on the nation's will.''
He also claimed that the MHP should come to power on its own for Turkey to join the EU in an honourable way.
Bahceli said that Turkey would face serious problems, domestic and foreign, if it doesn't have a powerful government after the elections.
Bahceli said that his party promised to fight corruption before April 18 elections and then he told about the operations carried out against corruption during the time they were coalition partners in the current government.
About the Kurdish state which is tried to be established in Northern Iraq, said that such an independent state would cause a lot of trouble for Turkey in the future.
