LEFKOSA - Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Foreign and Defense Ministry has said that it will not be possible to continue direct talks between the two sides on the island if the Greek Cypriot Administration joins the EU.
The ministry has said that the Greek Cypriot side has been running the negotiations with the EU and stressed that their authority and sovereignty ends on the TRNC border. The ministry also indicated that the Greek Cypriot Administration did not represent the Turkish Cypriots.
The ministry stated that the EU Commission greenlighted the Greek Cypriots side and this made the Greek Cypriots even more intransigent. ''The negotiation process will come to a halt, the island's dividedness will become deeper and permanent and the instability in Eastern Mediterranean will affect the EU if the Greek Cypriot Administration is accepted to the EU,'' it was stated.
''We would like to one more time warn the EU Council which will take the final decision on this matter. It is the Greek Cypriot Administration which has been running the negotiations with the EU. Their sovereignty end on the TRNC border and they don't represent Turkish Cypriots.''
''Under 1959-1960 agreements, Cyprus cannot become members to an economic or political international organization where Turkey and Greece are not members. The EU Commission's greenlighting the Greek Cypriots are making them more intransigent and this would not do good for anyone,'' it was stated.
''We're hoping that the EU would take into consideration all these factors and would not make a serious mistake at the EU Council meeting in Copenhagen on Dec. 12-13,'' the ministry said.
