Baykal: E.U. Door Continues To Remain Open Theoretically

ANKARA - Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal said on Thursday that the European Union (EU) Progress Report on Turkey which was announced on Wednesday was a technical work and noted, ''EU door continues to remain open theoretically. This report will not prevent a political decision about Turkey's membership from being taken at the Copenhagen Summit.''
Baykal told A.A correspondent that results of November 3 elections would be a determinant in Turkey-EU relations.
The report did not give good news that a decision about Turkey's membership would be taken in December, Baykal said.
Baykal noted, ''it is not impossible to get this result in December. A strong government which is ambitious about EU membership has to come to the power in Turkey. This is the main condition.''
''We have to be very careful about proposals about intermediary formulas that will keep Turkey's EU relations away from full membership target. Turkey will or will not become an EU member. Our target is to become a full member by having the same rights with other members. We will not accept an incomplete status or a special position,'' Baykal said.
Baykal stated that the EU members would wait for the elections in Turkey, adding that Turkey would have more chance in EU membership if the new government attributes importance to this issue.
