BOZUYUK SUMMIT
AK Party leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with Halis Toprak, the former owner of Toprakbank, Mehmet Emin Karamehmet, the former owner of Pamukbank and Mustafa Suzer, the former owner of Kentbank. All the banks went bankrupt. The meeting took place in Bozuyuk town of northwestern Bileck province where Halis Toprak has a factory. Erdogan came to Bozuyuk with the helicopter of Toprak. The former bank owners told Erdogan in the meeting that their banks were transferred to the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund claming that they didn't commit any crime.

DENKTAS UNDERGOES SUCCESSFUL HEART SURGERY
TRNC President Rauf Denktas underwent a successful heart surgery in New York Presbytarian Medical Center. Denktas's aortic valve was changed and he is fine. Turkish doctor Mehmet Oz from New York Colombia University operated Denktas. Meanwhile Greek Foreign Ministry Spokesman Panos Beglitis wished speedy recovery for Denktas.

FAREWELL CONGRESS IN MAY 2003
Democratic Left Party (DSP) leader and Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit is expected to say farewell to his party in DSP Congress to be held in May 2003. Foreign Minister Sukru Sina Gurel is seen as the luckiest candidate for DSP leadership. Another name within the party who can take the place of Ecevit is Eskisehir mayor Yýlmaz Buyukersen. The other names can be listed as former Finance Minister Zekeriya Temizel, State Ministers Zeki Sezer, Tayfun Icli, National Education Minister Necdet Tekin and Izmir mayor Ahmet Piristina. Ecevit is not expected to appoint anybody in his place, but he can designate this person by the missions he will give to him/her.

MESSAGE THAT PLEASES DEHAP
Supreme Court of Appeals Chief Prosecutor Sabih Kanadoglu asked the Higher Board of Election to re-examine the issue of whether or not Democratic People's Party (DEHAP) would take part in Nov. 3 elections. Higher Election Board Chairman Tufan Algan said that ''Chief Prosecutor carries out a general investigation in Turkey. We will firstly set up a commission, and we will examine the documents. Later our Board can discuss them.'' However, Algan added that the ballots started to be distributed to provinces and that it would be difficult to change the ballots.

BUSH SAYS ''DECEMBER''
U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon) asked Turkish General Staff for permission last Friday to deploy soldiers to Northern Iraq from Turkey. The U.S. can hit Iraq in December after the holy month Ramadan. The U.S. which is claimed to launch an operation against Iraq after the Ramadan, will continue to deploy soldiers to the region until that date. Pentagon asked General Staff for permission to use Turkish bases, and to transfer U.S. soldiers to the region via Turkey. U.S. wants to use Incirlik, Diyarbakýr and Malatya airports. Turkey, on the other hand, insists on the need to abide by U.N. resolutions. Parliamentary decision is necessary under Article 92 of the Turkish Constitution for American soldiers to come to Turkish territory.

BRUSSELS ''LANDING''
The Turkey Platform which represents a total of 200 non-governmental organizations issued a statement and noted that ''Turkey did its mission, now it is EU's turn.'' The Platform will go to Brussels and explain EU Commission representatives the reasons of Turkey's just demand of being a full member of EU. Turkey, which lifted emergency rule, which abolished death penalty, and which permitted broadcasting and education in mother tongue, now wants EU to fulfill its promises to Turkey. Chairman of the Platform Rifat Hisarciklioglu said that full membership is a legal right of Turkey stemming from EU laws.

NO DATE, BUT MONEY FROM EU
European Union (EU) Commission did not shed green light to Turkey for a date to start membership negotiations in the draft of Progress Report. Strategy paragraph did not mention Turkey's negotiation date with the EU in the report which claimed that Turkey has not fulfilled completely the Copenhagen political criteria. The heads of government and state in Copenhagen Summit will take a ''political decision'' on setting a date for Turkey to start full membership negotiations according to the government and programme which will be set up after the November 3 elections. The report also said that 354 million euros of financial aid would be extended to Turkey.

NEW FACE TO KARAKOY
A five-star hotel, fair and congress center, art museum and a giant aquarium will be constructed on the coast between Karakoy and Salipazari in Istanbul. The coast will have a new international dimension with ''Galataport'' project. The investment cost of the project which will be auctioned by built-operate-transfer model is 148 million U.S. dollars. A fair and congress center will be constructed on 13,221 square meters and an art museum will be constructed on 11,000 square meters.

''FIND SCHOLARSHIP FOR US''
Police took into custody a person who opened a banner saying, ''we also want to study at a university. Find a scholarship for us,'' in a public meeting at which Justice and Development Party (AK Party) leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan addressed people in Bilecik province. Later, police released the person upon the reporters' intervention. Only one thousand people's attending the public meeting destroyed Erdogan's morale.

VOTES OF POLITICAL POWER TO OPPOSITION
Those who voted for Democratic Left Party (DSP), Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and Motherland Party (ANAP) in 1999 will prefer Justice and Development Party (AK Party), Republican People's Party (CHP) and Youth Party (GP) in the coming elections. According to a survey which was conducted by Social Researches Center (SRC), 36.3 percent of the people who voted for MHP in 1999 elections will vote for AK Party in the November 3 elections.

TURKEY PLATFORM CONVENES IN ISTANBUL
Turkey Platform including more than 200 non-governmental organizations, which targeted European Union (EU) full membership, convened in Istanbul. Platform published a declaration saying that Turkey proved its determination and now it is the turn of EU. The statement, read out by Turkish Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges (TOBB) Chairman Rifat Hisarciklioglu, said, ''extremely important changes fulfilled by a parliament which has decided for early elections, revealed the political will of Turkey regarding EU membership.''

DENKTAS UNDERGOES SUCCESSFUL HEART SURGERY
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Rauf Denktas underwent a successful heart surgery in New York Presbytarian Medical Center. TRNC Presidential Undersecretary Ergun Olgun said that the surgery lasted three hours and stated that Denktas' aortic valve was changed. ''It was a very successful surgery. Tests proved that Denktas does not have any other problem. Denktas is being kept in intensive care unit at the moment,'' Olgun added.

ERDOGAN: ''OUR PRIME MINISTER CANDIDATE CAN BE SURPRISE''
Justice and Development Party (AK Party) leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that their prime minister candidate could be a surprise after the November 3 elections. Erdogan stated that this person could be Abdullah Gul, Vecdi Gonul or Bulent Arinc who came onto the agenda previously and added that his party's prime minister candidate could also be a person who was not on the agenda today. He recalled that the prime minister candidate would be determined by Central Decision and Executive Board (CDEB).

KANADOGLU APPLIES TO HIGHER ELECTION BOARD FOR DEHAP
Supreme Court of Appeals' Chief Prosecutor Sabih Kanadoglu asked the Higher Board of Election to re-examine the issue of whether or not Democratic People's Party (DEHAP) would take part in Nov. 3 elections. Kanadoglu said in a statement that political parties, which are indispensable elements of the democratic political life, have to act in line with the Constitution and the laws.
