CHP'S TRUMP IN SHANTY AREA IS AUNT CATHY
Kemal Dervis, a candidate deputy from Republican People's Party (CHP), will go to shanty areas in his electoral zone with his wife Catherine. Catherine Dervis will visit houses. Dervis' consultant Oya Unlu is preparing Catherine Dervis' program of house visits. Mrs. Dervis will especially pay visits to shanty houses in Kadikoy district of Istanbul, from where his husband Kemal Dervis has run his candidacy for the general elections.
COSMIC ORDER TO SECOND ARMY
The General Staff ordered the Second Army in eastern province of Malatya to ''control preparedness level of the units'' a day before the Kurdish parliament convenes. Turkey has started to take military measures upon two important developments in Iraq. The General Staff sent a ''cosmic message'' to the Second Army Headquarters in Malatya, responsible for the border with Iraq, and ordered it to ''control preparedness levels'' of units bound to this army. Here are the two important developments which made Ankara take steps: U.S. President George Bush was authorized by the House of Representatives to use power against Iraq. Barzani and Talabani are convening the Kurdish National Assembly in Erbil today to take the first step towards Iraqi federal state. The aim of the cosmic order is to list the needs in the region including heavy weapons, to meet needs if there are any, and take measures for additional demands. Measures to be taken against immigration that may occur during an operation were also take up. In such a case, it is planned to meet the immigrants in Northern Iraqi territory instead of opening borders like in 1991. The number of immigrants is predicted to reach 80 thousand. If the operation lasts long, this number can climb to 500 thousand and Turkey has to get prepared for these possibilities.
OCALAN'S DEATH SENTENCE COMMUTED INTO LIFE IMPRISONMENT
Ankara State Security Court (DGM) No. 2 commuted death sentence of Abdullah Ocalan, the head of the terrorist organization, into heavy life imprisonment under the law which annulled death sentence except war or wartime threat.

PASSENGER TO EU TRAIN
Turkey is trying not to miss the European Union (EU) train. But, students who are staging protests are still taken under custody. In Turkey, which is living with the dream of EU membership, a girl student was taken to police station just because she expressed her views. Then, she was detained. The incidents that occurred during the opening of the 2002-2003 academic year in Istanbul University did not suit Turkey, which is trying to enter the EU. Basak Sahin, who protested Higher Education Board (YOK) during the speech of Rector Prof. Dr. Kemal Alemdaroglu, was taken under custody. Then, Alemdaroglu continued his speech. Meanwhile, a group started a protest by opening banners writing ''no to IMF'' and ''more right to speak to students.'' A total of 19 students, including 8 girls, were detained.
PERFECT EAGLE AND SUPER CANARY
Fenerbahce soccer club of Turkey did not give any chance to Solna of Sweden, with which it drew 3-3 in Sweden, in Kadikoy, Istanbul and took the ticket for the UEFA Cup second round with its efficient football in the second half. Fenerbahce beat Sarajevo 3-1 while Besiktas scored five goals against Sarajevo. Besiktas soccer club of Turkey played very well against Sarajevo, with which it drew in Istanbul. Besiktas qualified for the second round with goals scored by Pancu, Ibrahim, Ahmet Dursun, Yasin and Ali Cansun. Although Denizlispor was defeated by French Lorient, it also qualified for the second round while Kocaelispor and Ankaragucu were eliminated from the cup.

KURDISH STATE IS ACTUALLY FOUNDED
Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit made this definition for the first time and then warned: ''But, if something in a more official level occurs, Turkey will do what is necessary.'' Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said, ''independent Kurdish state is de facto founded. But, it is under our control in a sense.'' About the Kurdish parliament to convene today, Ecevit said, ''I hope it will not be recognized as a state parliament. If it exceeds the proper limits, we will do what is necessary.''
ALONE IN BRUSSELS
When everybody is confusing things in Turkey to gain more votes, Deputy Prime Minister and Motherland Party (ANAP) leader Mesut Yilmaz gave priority to the European Union (EU). Yilmaz, who is left alone even in the government related with the EU membership, did not change his priority even a month before the elections. Yilmaz went to Brussels on Thursday to attend EU meeting instead of addressing people for elections. When his friends said, ''party is in a difficult condition. Leave everything aside. Let's address people'', Yilmaz said, ''EU membership is our obligation for the forthcoming generations. My party and I are ready to pay the costs in this path if necessary.''

DENKTAS: ''CYPRUS WILL BE ETERNALLY DIVIDED''
New York talks, having ''vital importance'' for solution of Cyprus question, began. Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Rauf Denktas and Greek Cypriot leader Glafcos Clerides met on Thursday within the framework of the trilateral summit with United Nations (U.N.) Secretary General Kofi Annan. Prior to his meeting with Annan, Denktas said, ''I will say only one thing. If the European Union (EU) accepts Greek Cypriot administration as member, talks will end and Cyprus will be eternally divided.''
RISE IN SALARIES OF CIVIL SERVANTS VALID AS OF OCTOBER 1
The Finance Ministry announced that the gross 100 million Turkish liras (TL) of rise in salaries of civil servants was valid as of October 1. According to this, the lowes civil servant salary climbed from 293 million 230 thousand TL to 364 million 880 thousand TL with a 24.4 percent increase.

BAYKAL SAYS IT IS ANGER TIME NOW
Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal who launched his party's election campaign in Ankara gave the signal of 'harsh opposition'. Baykal said that it was anger time now. Baykal stated, ''40 billion U.S. dollars have gone from the banks. There are 2 million unemployed people in Turkey. We will capture and try the people who did this.'' Baykal asked the candidates and organization to work for a 'single political power'.
OZKOK WANTS RERORTERS NOT TO ASK QUESTION ON IRAQ
General Staff Chief General Hilmi Ozkok and commanders of land, air and naval forces visited Diyarbakir on Thursday. Ozkok said that they were paying courtesy visits to the officials. He wanted reporters not to ask questions about Northern Iraq. General Ozkok, Land Forces Commander General Aytac Yalman, Air Forces Commander General Cumhur Asparuk, Naval Forces Commander Admiral Bulent Alpkaya and Gendarmerie Forces Commander General Sener Eruygur who visited Erzincan, Erzurum and Van the previous day visited Emergency Rule Governor Gokhan Aydiner on Thursday.

ECEVIT: ''TURKEY WILL DO WHAT IS NECESSARY''
Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit made statement on the Kurdish parliament which will convene in Northern Iraq on Friday. Ecevit said that the parliament should not be introduced as if it was a state parliament. Ecevit warned the Iraqi Kurdistan Democrat Party (IKDP) leader Massoud Barzani and Patriotic Union for Iraqi Kurdistan (PUK) leader Jalal Talabani by saying that Turkey would do what was necessary on the issue. Ecevit told the two leaders that they should give up the idea of Kurdish state.
TOBB SAYS POLITICAL PARTIES SHOULD EXPLAIN PUBLICLY THEIR PROGRAMMES
The Association of Turkish Chambers and Commodity Exchanges (TOBB) chairman Rifat Hisarciklioglu said that Turkish people should know the details on how the political parties would fulfill their programmes and added that they wanted those details to be on the agenda of Turkey until November 3. Hisarciklioglu recalled that they, as TOBB, have said that time should not be wasted since the election date became definite.

INFLATION REDUCES TO LOWEST RATE OF LAST 19 MONTHS
The annual inflation rate in September was 40.9 percent in wholesale prices and 37.0 percent in consumer prices. The annual inflation in consumer prices decreased to the lowest rate of last 19 months and it in wholesale prices reduced to the lowest rate of last 18 months. The inflation rate in the January-September period of 2002 was 21.7 percent in wholesale prices and 20.1 percent in consumer prices. Meanwhile, according to 12-month averages as of September 2002, inflation rate was 63.0 percent in wholesale prices and 54.2 percent in consumer prices.
OCALAN'S DEATH SENTENCE COMMUTED INTO HEAVY LIFE IMPRISONMENT
Ankara State Security Court (DGM) No. 2 commuted on Thursday death sentence of Abdullah Ocalan, the head of the terrorist organization, into heavy life imprisonment in accordance with the law within the framework of adjustment to the European Union (EU). The court decision said, ''since the crime on charges of which Abdullah Ocalan was sentenced to death sentence under Article 125 of the Turkish Penal Code was not committed during a war or close war threat, a decision about implementation of first article of law no 4,771 has to be taken regarding him.''
