WASHINGTON D.C. - Ankara, which is having consultations uninterruptedly with the United States that is getting prepared for a military operation on Iraq, does not expect to face any surprise of the Washington administration, with which it is in a full exchange of information and will.
Sources said on Friday that if the United States decided to push the button for an operation, Turkey would be informed about the preparations.
Diplomatic sources in Washington D.C. stressed that it would be a ''hypothesis'' to say that Turkey would act together with the United States in case of an operation on Iraq. The sources said that an opposite hypothesis could also be put forward.
The sources noted that making such a decision was not easy for anybody. When it had to take a decision, Turkey would take into consideration its national interests and act according to that, the sources stated.
Pointing to the importance of Turkey's contacts with Iraq, the same sources said that those contacts were important for learning about problems of a neighboring country and correctly directing the United States. At the same time, the sources noted, Turkey was suggesting Iraq that it should abide by United Nations (U.N.) Security Council resolutions.
Meanwhile, it is noted that Turkey, which is trying to estimate its financial losses in case of a probable military operation on Iraq, does not present a ''proper package'' to the U.S. administration.
Diplomatic sources said that ''incidents should develop more for presentation of a package on economic losses.''
