ANKARA - AK Party deputy group leader Abdullah Gul said on Monday that they won't allow postponement of elections.
Speaking in a news conference, Gul said that Turkish citizens living abroad will start to cast votes at customs gates after two days.
Noting that certain parties launch efforts to cancel the elections, Gul said that ''the decision to hold early elections was taken due to a reason. Turkey was in a great deadlock, there was chaos, political and economic indefiniteness, businessmen could not see their future.''
''A total of 449 deputies took the decision to hold early elections at that time not because everything was fine. If this election is postponed now, it will bring a great burden on Turkish economy. It is not possible to overcome this economic burden. Besides, the respectability of the parliament and the democracy will be damaged. People will lose their trust on parliament, political parties and politicians. Deputies should take into consideration the interests of the country today, rather than their interests. It is not possible to understand those who supported holding of early elections in the past, but who object to it now,'' Gul said.
Gul said that his party was doing its best to hold the election at the scheduled date ''despite the unfairness done against AK Party leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan.''
He indicated that his party's 59 deputies would attend the Parliament meeting tomorrow and they would not allow delaying the elections. ''Some party leaders are stating that the elections should not be postponed but their deputies should also act in the same manner. Otherwise, this will be binding for the leaders too. And the Turkish nation will not forget this.''
Gul also denied that Motherland Party (ANAP) leader Mesut Yilmaz has been in contact with AK Party executives and asking for their support to hold the elections at a later date.
