FOR WHOM WILL TRIBES OF 900 THOUSAND PEOPLE VOTE?
According to a survey published in Turkish Daily News on Monday, the majority of members of tribes will vote for the Justice and Development Party (AK Party). AK Party is followed by People's Democracy Party (HADEP) which is joining the elections under the umbrella of Democratic People's Party (DEHAP) and Republican People's Party (CHP). In the survey, it was claimed that the political parties that were aware of the power of the tribes in the elections try to obtain the votes of them and that there was bargaining among the sides in Ankara. The survey noted that it was seen that the tribes were close to rightist parties when the history was taken into consideration.

A TURK MADE THIS
German deputy Cem Ozdemir with Turkish origin announced that he would not accept the post by keeping his former word although he won the elections. Ozdemir explained the reason of his move with these words that would be a lesson for Turkish politicians: ''as a Turk living in Germany, I have a little bit eastern mentality. To this end, I will not return from my word.'' He stated, ''I am living in Germany, but I know what kind of an erosion the mentality that 'yesterday is yesterday and today is today' has caused in Turkish politics. I cannot also have the same mentality that I have been criticizing for years.'' ''Credibility is very important in politics. If I didn't act this way, I would have lost my credibility,'' Ozdemir added.

Galatasaray soccer club of Turkey will have its second match in Champions League against Barcelona at 9.45 p.m. Galatasaray coach Fatih Terim, who started his press conference by welcoming Spanish journalists in their own language, said, ''we are not afraid of losing, but we hate it.''

IF HE IS TRIED AGAIN, HE WILL AGAIN BE CONVICTED
Supreme Court Chief Prosecutor Sabih Kanadoglu said, ''the scope of the article 312 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK) is not narrowed but it is broadened. Justice and Development Party (AK Party) leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan cannot enter parliament during his life.'' Kanadoglu defined the decision of the YSK as an appropriate decision. Touching on the amendment to article 312, Kanadoglu said, ''in the amended article, the expression 'public order' was used instead of 'endangering the security of the public.' Public order is a broader definition also covering the security of the public. That is, the crime committed by Erdogan is still valid.''

ALSO EUROPE SAYS ''NO''
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) did not consider stopping of execution of the decision related with Justice and Development Party (AK Party) leader necessary. ECHR returned the application of Erdogan, who wanted to join the elections, for a precautionary measure. The court, which debated urgently the application requesting that the veto of the Higher Electoral Board (YSK) should be stopped, did not find the demand of the AK Party leader ''vital.''

LAST MINUTE ATTACK
Initiatives launched for a long time in order to postpone the elections and lift political bans were concluded in the last minute yesterday. The Motherland Party (ANAP) prepared a bill on amendment to Constitution and Election Law targeting at lifting political bans while New Turkey Party (YTP), Felicity Party (SP), ANAP, True Path Party (DYP) and the ''disgruntled'' deputies called on the parliament for an extraordinary session to postpone the elections due on November 3 and amend the Election Law. The motion calling for an extraordinary session was signed by 126 deputies.

SOS CALL FROM ARAFAT TO TURKEY
Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, under the siege of Israel, called Turkey's Consulate General in Jerusalem and said that ''the Israeli soldiers could enter his room any minute and kill him.'' Consul General Bicakci said, ''he was excited. He seemed to be a little bit tired. Maybe his health was affected. He wants Turkey to warn the United States and Israel.''

ECHR REJECTS ERDOGAN
European Court of Human Rights President Luzius Wildhaber rejected request of Justice and Development Party (AK Party) leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan's lawyers to take a precautionary measure against the Supreme Court of Appeals Criminal Department no: 8' decision.

ANKARA TO MEDIATE FOR MIDDLE EAST
Turkey will hold contacts with U.S. and Israeli authorities. Defending that the siege on the headquarters of President Yasser Arafat of Palestine should be removed, Turkey reiterated that it was ready to host a meeting in order to resume the peace talks. President Bulent Ecevit will ask U.S. President George W. Bush to show more interest in the Middle East. Sources said that Israel was negative about Prime Minister Ecevit's proposal to act as a mediator. Israeli Embassy sources said that they attributed importance to Turkey's special role, and added, ''however, we want Arafat to put an end to acts of violence.''

DANGEROUS HOURS IN THE AIR
The United States has increased its presence and activities in Turkey within the framework of preparations for a possible operation against Iraq. However, war vessels of the United States have brought forth some extremely serious dangers. One of engines of KC135-type cargo plane of the U.S. Air Forces carrying tonnes of fuel from Trabzon to Incirlik base, stopped over the area between Ankara and Cankiri. All the military bases in Ankara, Eskisehir, Malatya, Incirlik and Konya were put on alert. Courses of other planes were changed. At last, the cargo plane landed at the Incirlik Base.

PRIME MINISTER ECEVIT CALLS ARAFAT ON PHONE
Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit held a telephone conversation with President Yasser Arafat of Palestine. Following the conversation, Prime Minister Ecevit expressed his regret. He said that Arafat and the other people in the headquarters were suffering front potable water. Prime Minister Ecevit will send a letter to U.S. President George W. Bush and ask him to show more interest in the region.

AROUND 400 THOUSAND SHOPS CLOSED
Bankruptcy of shops which caused 10 quadrillion Turkish liras (TL) of tax loss made hundreds of thousands of people unemployed. Effects of the ongoing economic crisis still continue. Around 400 thousand workplaces have been closed. The tax debt of the tax-payers who have become unemployed is exceeding 10.2 quadrillion TL.

ISRAEL PREVENTS PEACE IN REGION
Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit called Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, who has been under the siege of Israel for five days, on the phone to support him. Ecevit said, ''Arafat is in a difficult situation. I will write a letter to U.S. President George Bush and ask for his assistance. Israel, which wants to render Arafat ineffective, prevents peace in the region.'' Israeli side rejected Ecevit's call for ''compromise.''

INDUSTRIALISTS WANTS REDUCTION IN ELECTRICITY PRICES
Some circles want the 10 percent reduction in natural gas prices which will be valid as of October 1 to be reflected also to electricity prices. The Energy and Natural Resources Ministry has not made a statement whether the reduction will also be reflected to the electricity prices while Ankara Chamber of Industry (ASO) Chairman Zafer Caglayan said that reduction should also be made in electricity prices.

A TOTAL OF 280 FOREIGNERS CAPTURED IN VAN
Gendarmerie forces intercepted 280 foreigners who entered Turkey illegally in eastern Van province and its townships. A Bangladeshi citizen, who had a heart attack when he understood that he would be captured, died.
