File Of Ocalan Returned To Ankara D.G.M.

ANKARA - File of Abdullah Ocalan, the head of terrorist organization PKK, which has been kept at the Prime Minister Office so far, was returned to the Ankara State Security Court (DGM) on Friday after capital punishment was lifted.
In accordance with European Union (EU) adjustment laws, the file about execution of death penalty given to Ocalan on charges of treason, which has been kept at the Prime Minister Office, was returned to the Ankara DGM through the Justice Ministry.
According to the new law, Ankara DGM no: 2 will determine conditions of Ocalan's punishment. Ankara DGM no: 2 can take a decision on the basis of the file, or file a new lawsuit. The court is expected to debate the case within two weeks.
According to the law, cell punishment of those whose death penalties were commuted to life imprisonment, will be implemented threefold for crimes of terrorism. Also, terrorists whose death penalties were commuted to life imprisonment, cannot benefit from the conditional release from prison. Their life imprisonment will continue till their death.
During the trial on Imrali Island, Ankara DGM no: 2 condemned Ocalan to death penalty on June 29, 1999 on charges of ''carrying out acts with the aim of separation of some parts of the territory which are under the sovereignty of the state by inciting and leading an armed terrorist organization which he founded.''
Supreme Court of Appeals Criminal Department no: 9 approved the death penalty of Ocalan on November 25, 1999.
The file was sent to the Justice Ministry to be conveyed to the parliament.
The Justice Ministry sent the file to the Prime Ministry Office.
