ERDOGAN'S POLITICAL BAN LIFTED
Diyarbakýr State Security Court (DGM) wiped out the criminal record of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the leader of the AK Party yesterday, enabling him to participate in November elections. Therefore he can be elected both as a deputy and prime minister. Diyarbakýr DGM ruled that he should have a clean record because of changes in Turkish penal law, effectively lifting a political ban against him. Turkey's election board would still have to approve his candidacy, but legal experts said there were no longer legal grounds to deny it. Erdogan was jailed for four months for reciting a poem at a political rally that said: Minarets are our bayonets, domes are our helmets, mosques are our barracks, believers are our soldiers. A court had ruled that the poem incited hatred along religious lines. But new laws require evidence of a concrete danger for conviction.

STATE STOPS, PRIVATE SECTOR PRODUCES
State Statistics Institute (DIE) said that the production in public sector increased by 0.9 percent, while private sector production increased by 16.1 percent in the second quarter of the year. These data showed that the state has almost stopped production, while the private sector produced a great amount. Thus indusrial production increased by 11.9 percent in the second quarter of the year.

ANNAN ASKS SIDES TO MAKE COMPROMISE
U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan who met with Greek Cypriot leader Glafcos Clerides and TRNC President Rauf Denktas asked the sides to launch more efforts for solution of the Cyprus question. Diplomatic sources said that Annan gave the message that the time was getting less and that the sides have to launch more efforts for a solution. Annan didn't submit a written document to the sides. After the meetings and the lunch, Annan said he continued to believe that the gaps dividing the two parties can be bridged. Both leaders in Cyprus accepted the call of Annan to meet in New York between 3-4 October.

SUREYYA AYHAN WINS WOMEN'S 1,500-METER RACE
Turkish atlethe Sureyya Ayhan won women's 1,500-meter race in the Berlin Golden League athletics meeting on Friday. Ayhan increased her ''Grand Prix'' point to 24 as she also won the previous golden league athletics meeting im Belgium.

AN ADVERTISEMENT MIRACLE
Cem Uzan, a businessman who has founded a party has disturbed the political balances in the country with the tv advertisements and his meetings with concerts organized in two months. Uzan does not have a proper party or an organization, but his party seems to have collected votes more than many parties namely the Motherland Party (ANAP), New Turkey Party (YTP) and Democratic Left Party (DSP) according to some surveys.

''TURKEY'S EU MEMBERSHIP IS TO ADVANTAGE OF EVERYBODY''
U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz said that Turkey's EU membership is to the advantage of everybody. Addressing a think thank, Wolfowitz said that the experience of Turkey showed to the Islamic world that democracy is difficult, but possible. He added that the approval of the EU adjustment laws in the Turkish parliament is a great step.

BARZANI WARNED FOR LAST TIME
Turkey warned Massaud Barzani, the leader of the Iraqi Kurdistan Democratic Party (IKDP) who used a violent style in his statements and who extended support to the terrorist organization PKK-KADEK. Foreign Minister Sukru Sina Gurel said that the statements of Barzani would not be useful for anybody, adding that ''we will do what is necessary without speaking much.'' Turkey who asked Barzani to give a definite decision about its relations with PKK and KADEK and its point of view about Turkey, said that Turkey will take the steps that are necessary for its national interests.

TAKE YOUR HANDS OFF JUDICIARY
Eraslan Ozkaya, the Chairman of the Supreme Court of Appeals warned the politicians to take their hands off the judiciary in the opening remark he delivered in the beginning of the new judiciary year. Calling for ''urgent reform'' in judiciary, Ozkaya said that the EU criteria have to be assessed as the demands of the modern Turkish society.

ERDOGAN CAN BE DEPUTY CANDIDATE
Justice and Development Party (AK Party) leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan's demand to clear off his record of convictions was accepted, so he can apply to Supreme Election Board (YSK) to be a deputy candidate. Diyarbakir State Security Court (DGM) no: 4 debated application of Erdogan's lawyer, and decided to clear off Erdogan's record of convictions. Erdogan was sentenced to ten months in prison and 716 million Turkish liras in fine on April 21, 1998, on charges of opposing the Article 312 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK).

INDUSTRY PRODUCTION INCREASES 7.4 PERCENT
The industry production which shrank 23.3 percent in the first six months of 2001 because of the economic crisis increased 7.4 percent in the same period this year. State Statistics Institute announced the developments of the second three monthly period and the first half of the year. The industry production which rose 2.8 percent between January and March also increased 11.9 percent between April and June. It had dropped 11.1 percent in the second quarter of 2001.

UNITED NATIONS' COMPROMISE PRESSURE ON DENKTAS
United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan met separately with Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Rauf Denktas and Greek Cypriot leader Glafcos Clerides in Paris. Annan who invited Denktas and Clerides to Paris to hold meetings put pressure on Denktas for reaching compromise. Turkey's new plan also came onto the agenda at the meeting.

TURKS' HISTORY TO CHANGE
Graves used by Turks named ''Balbal'' dated to 1,200 B.C. were found during excavations carried out in eastern Hakkari province by Prof. Veli Sevin. The graves which proved that ''Turks lived in the region during B.C. 1,200s'' will be taken up at the Turkish History Congress to be held by Turkish History Authority between September 9-13. Turkish History Authority Chairman Prof. Yusuf Halacoglu said that 312 scientists from 41 countries including Russian Federation, China, Japan, Korea and Turkish Republics would join this year's congress. Halacoglu said that new archeological findings would be brought to the agenda of the congress.

TURKEY SUPERVISES EU THIS TIME
A 25-people Turkish delegation including court chairmen, prosecutors, police chiefs and gendarmes paid a six day visit to the Netherlands and France. The delegation of Turkey which is accustomed to be supervised by the delegations of the European Union (EU) countries inspected the prisons in the Netherlands this time. The prosecutors and police chiefs were shocked with the bad conditions in the prisons. They also conveyed their views and criticisms about the shops selling drugs publicly, to the Dutch officials.
