VERHEUGEN SHATTERS TURKEY'S ILLUSIONS
The European Union (EU) Commission for Enlargement Guenter Verheugen, who made a statement following EU Foreign Ministers meeting held in Denmark, said Turkey should not wait for a negotiation date in Copenhagen summit.
He said, ''approval of reform package in Turkey is an important step taken toward membership. We should not forget, Turkey is a candidate country. We want to see the implementation of the reforms.''

MUMCU IN AK PARTY
Isparta parliamentarian Erkan Mumcu, who resigned from the Motherland Party (ANAP), joined Justice and Development Party (AK Party) during the inauguration ceremony of AK Party provincial center. Mumcu and Erdogan opened the center together.

DSP: WE HAVE SHIFTED THE RUBBLE, WE WILL PASS TO STRONG ECONOMY
Democratic Left Party (DSP) said they exerted a busy performance period to make Turkey get rid of the crisis, and that the most difficult period of the economic program came to an end.
Masum Turker, the State Minister responsible for Economy, pointed out that, ''support mechanisms are being developed for sections which fell into difficulty because of the measures taken within the scope of Program regarding Transition to Strong Economy.'' He said various measures and prjects began to take effect, noting that the reform process continued without interruption.

HE CANNOT BE A CANDIDATE
The most authorized personality of the Supreme Court spoke clearly at the August 30 reception: Tayyip Erdogan and Erbakan cannot definitely take part in the elections. Elections was one the main issues discussed at the August 30 reception. When candidate deputyship of Justice and Development Party (AK Party) leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Necmettin Erbakan were being discussed, the most efficient personality of Supreme Court said, ''neither of them can be candidates. There is nothing to be discussed in respect of laws.'' The official said, ''the legal situation of Erdogan and Erbakan are certain. Their objections are not valid. Their punishments prevent their candidacy.''

OZKAN: ''I AM YTP CANDIDATE DEPUTY FROM ISTANBUL''
Husamettin Ozkan, a leading name of the New Turkey Party (YTP), denied news that he would not run his candidacy for the elections and said, ''these are manipulations of a certain party. I promise for once. I am a candidate from Istanbul.'' Meanwhile, the number of people who have applied to run their candidacies for elections from YTP has reached 650.

NATION WANTS, I HAVE COME
Erkan Mumcu, who put on the emblem of Justice and Development Party (AK Party) at a ceremony held in Istanbul, joined this party together with Mirac Akdogan and Hasan Ozyer, who also resigned from Motherland Party (ANAP). Mumcu claimed that he joined AK Party in line with the demands of the nation.

LAST THREAT FROM CIVIL SERVANTS FOR A RISE IN SALARIES
Civil servants who could not reach any compromise with the government on the rise in salaries staged a protest in Ankara. Thousands of civil servants coming around Turkey addressed the government with slogans saying, ''increase our salaries, and we vote for you'' and ''you help us in September and we help us on November 3.'' Finance Minister Sumer Oral told Sabah that they made calculations and proposed gross 75 million Turkish liras (TL) of rise in salaries according to budget figures. Oral noted that this would bring Turkey 250 trillion TL of burden. However, he said, they could not convince the civil servants.

96TH LIFE FADES AWAY IN DEATH FASTING
Number of those who lost their life in death fasting, staged to protest F type prisons and isolation, reached 96.
Fatma Tokay Kose (35), who was among the 6th death team, lost her life in Ankara Numune Hospital.
Kose, who was held in Canakkale Prison before ''return to life'' operation, later was sent to Kutahya Prison.
Kose had started death fasting 399 days ago to protest F type prisons.

PRESIDENT SEZER DUE TO AFRICA
President Ahmet Necdet Sezer will go to South Africa on September 1 to attend World Summit on Sustainable Development.
Presidential Press Center made a statement and said President Sezer will go to South African Republic on September 1, 2002 to attend World Summit on Sustainable Development that will take place between September 2-4.
President Sezer will deliver a speech on Monday, which will be the first day of the summit in which heads of state and government of 100 countries and representatives of some international organizations, would attend.

COUNTDOWN IN MOTHER TONGUE
Regulations which will pave the way for education and broadcasting in mother tongue have been prepared. If Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit approves the amendments, Turkey will be stronger against the European Union (EU). Foreign Minister Sukru Sina Gurel, who will start EU marathon that will last a month on September 3, will meet with many EU officials and request the EU to set a negotiation date for Turkey. The real problem for Turkey is to show that EU-related laws would not stay on pages. Relevant ministries have prepared two draft regulations to implement education and broadcasting in mother tongue. If Prime Minister Ecevit approves these two regulations towards which he is also positive, Turkey will have a new trump for the EU.

TURKEY'S COLOURS SHINE BY SEZEN
A total of 20 thousand people who came to Ephesus Ancient Theatre lived an unforgettable night the previous day. There were Armenians, Greeks, Kurds, Jews and Muslims on the stage. They were headed by famous singer Sezen Aksu. They altogether sang songs which have been sung on these lands for centuries.

OZKAN DOES NOT THINK OF CANDIDACY
Scarcity of applications for candidate deputyship from New Turkey Party (YTP), which is continuing searches for an electoral alliance with the Democrat Turkey Party (DTP) and Socialist People's Party (SHP), demoralized party members. It was claimed that Husamettin Ozkan told his close friends that he would not run his candidacy for the November 3 general elections.

NEW QUEEN OF ATLETICS
Sureyya Ayhan of Turkey, who became the first in 1,500 metres event in the Memorial Van Damme Atletics which was the sixth leg of the Golden League in Brussels, is applauded by all the world. Italian television station used the expression ''new queen of atletics'' for Ayhan while La Gazetta della Sport said that Turkish athlete Ayhan was the newest personality in 2002.

VISA REQUIREMENT TO ARABS MAKE TOURISM AGENCIES AFRAID
Turkey, which has been spending million of U.S. dollars for workings to promote Turkey and to increase tourism income, will implement visa requirement to Arab countries.
Arab countries reacted to this decision which is taken within the framework of European Union (EU) adjustment bill. Tourism agencies warn that this decision will negatively effect tourism.

CIVIL SERVANTS CALL LEADERS TO SUMMIT FOR INCREASE IN WAGES
Civil servants, who could not reach an agreement with the government in collective bargaining talks for the year 2003 and for recovery increase, began to stage protests.
The civil servants said they would not meet with the ministers from now on, and called on the coalition leaders to hold a summit on rate of increase in wages.
