TURKEY WARNS BARZANI
Turkey warned Iraqi Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) leader Massoud Barzani through his representative Hoshyar Zebari. Zebari met with Ministry of Foreign Affairs Middle East Department Director General Turkekul Kurttekin. During the meeting, Turkish side reiterated that it attributed great importance to territorial integrity of Iraq, and warned Barzani not to launch any initiative to form an independent Kurdish state.

FERRYBOAT DISASTER IN KARAKAYA DAM
A ferryboat carrying passengers and vehicles in Karakaya Dam from Baskil town of eastern province of Elazig to Battalgazi town of eastern province of Malatya, capsized. 11 people were rescued. One person died, and 14 others have still been missing. Search and rescue efforts have been continuing to find the missing passengers.

GALATASARAY TO TAKE ON BRUGES, BARCELONA AND LOKOMOTIV MOSCOW
Draw for the first group stage of the 2002-2003 Champions League was made in Monaco. Galatasaray will take on FC Barcelona of Spain, Lokomotiv Moscow of Russia and Club Bruges KV of Belgium in Group H. Matches will be played between September 17-18, September 24-25, October 1-2, October 22-23, October 29-30 and November 12-13.

OKUYAN JOINS MHP
Former Labour and Social Security Minister Yasar Okuyan joined the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP). While number of MHP deputies increased to 125, number of independent deputies decreased to 21 after Okuyan joined the MHP.

DANISH POLICE'S SHAMEFUL ATTITUDE
Five Turkish policemen who were invited to Denmark to join a training programme on human rights, were detained on charges of illicit drug trafficking. Turkish Embassy in Copenhagen launched initiatives at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Turkish policemen were released following a two-hour detention. Turkish Ambassador to Denmark Fugen Ok said that Danish Security Dapartment apoligized for the mistake.

PAPANDREOU: ''EU SHOULD SET A DATE FOR TURKEY AT COPENHAGEN SUMMIT''
Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs George Papandreou said that the European Union (EU) should set a date for the openning of full membership negotiations with Turkey during the Copenhagen Summit in December. Papandreou called Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister Sukru Sina Gurel on the phone, and said, ''there is not any difference between Turkey and the other candidate countries. We will support Turkey.''

IMF: ''TURKEY'S ECONOMIC PROGRAMME IS GOING WELL''
International Monetary Fund (IMF) said that Turkey's economic programme was going well. IMF Foreign Relations Director Tom Dawson who held a press meeting at IMF center in Washington D.C. said that they did not plan to ask political parties to be loyal to the economic programme before the upcoming elections due to great public support to the economic programme in Turkey. He said that they were naturally pleased when politicians used positive expressions about the programme and added that the voters would reveal their preferences in the elections.

GOVERNMENT TAKES UP KURDISH
The Council of Ministers convened under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit. State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Devlet Bahceli who also acts as leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), did not attend the meeting. During the meeting, the issue of education and broadcasting in mother tongue was taken up. State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz, who also acts as leader of the Motherland Party (ANAP), said that works about education and broadcasting in mother tongue should be accelerated before release of the European Union (EU)Progress Report.

GULEN SCARED
The United States which has been uneasy about activities of Fethullah Gulen who went to the United States some 3.5 years ago due to his health problems, decided not to extend his visa. Gulen will be sent to Turkey after his visa expires. Prosecutor Nuh Mete Yuksel said that he would present new evidences during the trial of Gulen on charges of ''founding an illegal organization in order to form a state based on religious rules by changing the secular order of Republic of Turkey''.

40 PEOPLE DETAINED
A group of 60 people held a demonstration in Istanbul and attempted to submit a document to the French Embassy to protest F-type prisons. Security forces intervened in the group, and detained 40 people.

TUSIAD: ''ELECTIONS SHOULD NOT BE POSTPONED''
Turkish Industrialists' and Businessmen's Association (TUSIAD) said that elections which is scheduled to be held on November 3, 2002, said that the elections should not be postponed. TUSIAD said that postponement of the elections would create a new atmosphere of uncertainty.

GUREL: ''WE DID NOT GIVE GUARANTEE TO ANYONE ABOUT IRAQ''
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister Sukru Sina Gurel responded to Patriotic Union for Iraqi Kurdistan (PUK) leader Jalal Talabani who said, ''the United States assured us that Turkey would not intervene in Iraq.'' Gurel said, ''we did not give guarantee to anyone about Iraq. We have been working to find a solution without any intervention.''

A COMMISSION TO BE FORMED FOR BROADCASTING IN KURDISH
The Council of Ministers decided to form a commission to carry out the works about broadcasting and education in mother tongue. Justice Minister Aysel Celikel, National Education Minister Necdet Tekin, Interior Minister Muzaffer Ecemis, State Minister Yilmaz Karakoyunlu for the state-run Turkish Radio and Television (TRT) and State Minister Ali Dogan for human rights are the members of the commission.

WE FAIL A GRADE ALSO IN EDUCATION
After ''ethic depression'' and ''corruption'', the education report prepared by the European Union (EU) set aside our pride. There are interesting figures in the report which reveals that we are behind even African countries in education: there are 9 million uneducated women in Turkey. Turkey is ranked 105th in the world in list of ''share allocated from the budget for education''. 29.4 percent of educated young people is unemployed.

''SCENARIOS WILL FAIL''
Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahceli said that the main reason of censure motion to overthrow the government was to postpone the early elections. ''However, these scenarios will fail.''

Women's 1,500-meter European Champion Sureyya Ayhan of Turkey will run today in the 26th Memorial Van Damme, which is the 6th leg of the ''Golden League'', in Brussels, Belgium.

TURKER CRITICIZES DERVIS
State Minister Masum Turker for Economy criticized his predecessor Kemal Dervis. He said, ''Dervis made statements that there was political and economic uncertainty in Turkey while Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit was taken to hospital for his health problems. It is totally wrongful to claim that Prime Minister Ecevit's health problems caused an atmosphere of uncertainty.''
