ISTANBUL - A ceremony was held in Istanbul's Taksim Square to mark the August 30 Victory and Turkish Armed Forces Day.
Participants laid a wreath to the Monument of Republic, and observed a minute of silence.
First Army Commander General Cetin Dogan signed the special book of the monument saying, ''today, we are celebrating the 80th anniversary of the great victory that enabled us to found the modern and secular Republic of Turkey. Great Leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk's reforms and principles have still been guiding us. Turkish Armed Forces will continue to protect Ataturk's reforms and principles. We are grateful to you, Ataturk. Rest in peace.''
Istanbul Governor Erol Cakir, Istanbul Acting Mayor Umit Ozerol, Police Chief Hasan Ozdemir and representatives of political parties were in attendance at the ceremony.
