U.S. Proposes To Set Up Anti-missile System Among Nato Allies Including Turkey

WASHINGTON - The United States has proposed a common air defense system to protect NATO allies including Turkey against missiles in Europe.
Defense circles in Washington recently told the A.A that the Bush administration proposed to NATO allies to establish an anti-missile system in Europe. Bush offered industrial, financial and logistic support to the project which will be carried out by U.S. companies.
A delegation from U.S. Defense Department Pentagon visited NATO capitals to hold meetings with officials about setting up this defense system.
The delegation also had meetings in Ankara end of July. Sources said Turkey welcomed the idea of forming a common air defense system in principle.
It was indicated that the Turkish defense industry could also contribute to the project if the project is realized. Technical and financial specifics of the project will be announced in the coming months.
