ANKARA - Former State Minister Kemal Dervis joined the Republican People's Party (CHP) on Friday.
CHP leader Deniz Baykal, who addressed a ceremony held at CHP headquarters at 11.00 a.m., pointed out that Dervis participation to CHP was not easy, stressing that, ''a long and difficult period was experienced. We had to overcome many difficulties, and in the end it took place.''
Baykal said a big and new formation began to appear in Turkey with the participation of Dervis to CHP, noting that, ''Turkey should be renewed. We should leave behind a crisis period and carry Turkey to the place it deserves in the world. CHP from now on is at a point which should be supported by everybody who change and renew Turkey and who wants to save Turkey from crisis.
Stating that they want a new Turkey, Baykal said, ''it is not possible to achieve this with the political confusion and political understandings of the past. We need a new political scene in order to achieve this. Dervis's participation to CHP and his searches to reveal such a formation should be taken up as a call to whole society.''
Baykal said, ''we will get rid of this crisis. We will be a contemporary and competitive market economy,'' stressing that strict rules of economy will be together with the feelings of tender and solidarity of social democrat understanding.
Expressing belief that they would fulfill this synthesis, Baykal said they would create a new Turkey in which the state would serve the people.
''We are setting off in a difficult period of the country. Turkey needs such a voyage. We will create a new Turkey. This will not be a state which steer the people and which impose its own understanding. We will democratize politics. We feel respect to our people. We embrace beliefs and ethnical roots of everybody. We are calling every section of the society to this meeting. We can open ways for Turkey if we can succeed in this.''
Baykal said that Dervis' joining CHP was not an easy process but a troublesome process.
''We had some obstacles in this process but in the end, Dervis joined us,'' Baykal noted.
After the speeches, Dervis signed the membership form.
Dervis said that CHP was a part of his life and it was a party which achieved to fulfil difficult duties in the last 70 years.
''We had a unity of opinion. We have entered 21st century. We have to carry Turkey to this century in real sense. Turkey has the power and potential for this. I tried to give this message when I landed at Esenboga Airport 18 months ago. Turkey can be a strong European country living in welfare. But, we have to bring together economy, human and efficient state and fulfil this modern synthesis in order to put this power into practice. We can make Turkey a country progressing towards the future with faster steps instead of a country going back. But, we need the support of everybody who long for this progress not only the support of the members of the CHP. If we cannot form a team that can solve these problems after November 3 elections and if this team does not work in harmony, we cannot overcome these problems,'' Dervis noted.
Noting that old offenses should be forgotten, Dervis said that they had to unite under a modern social democratic understanding.
Dervis stated, ''only if all the center and leftist friends could come together. We will open our arms again in coming days. We will make a call for this synthesis to everybody and I hope we can get a final result.''
