ANKARA - President Ahmet Necdet Sezer will go to South Africa on September 1 to attend World Summit on Sustainable Development.
Presidential Foreign Affairs Chief Adviser Tacan Ildem told the weekly press briefing that Sezer would be accompanied by Environment Minister Fevzi Aytekin at the summit to be held in Johannesburg.
Ildem said that heads of state and government of 100 countries and representatives of some international organizations would attend the summit.
Sezer would deliver a speech at the summit on September 2, Ildem noted.
Around 20 thousand official delegations, 40 thousand representatives of non-governmental organizations, five thousand journalists were expected to join the summit, Ildem stated.
Ildem said, ''measures to put an end to poverty, hunger, armed clashes, illicit drug trafficking, terrorism, fanaticism, organized crimes, contagious diseases like malaria and tuberculosis will be taken up at the Johannesburg Summit.''
The action plan named ''Agenda 21'' was adopted at the United Nations (U.N.) Conference on Development held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, Ildem pointed out.
Ildem said that ten years of time following this conference would be evaluated at the Johannesburg Summit and that a new action plan which would replace ''Agenda 21'' was expected to be adopted at this summit.
Turkey was exerting comprehensive initiatives to put into practice the decisions taken at the Rio Conference, Ildem pointed out.
Ildem stated that ''Agenda 21'' was considered as one of the best plans prepared by the U.N. Development Program.
Turkey would make a presentation about its successful implementations on September 3, Ildem said.
Ildem noted that preparations for Johannesburg Summit was being made by all relevant ministries and public organizations in coordination with the Environment Ministry.
Sezer had stressed on global issues which humanity came across, particularly environmental and development problems at the Millenium Summit held in New York, Ildem said.
Ildem noted that Sezer stated that international community should toke joint action to solve those problems.
Sezer would have bilateral contacts with leaders of some countries attending the summit, Ildem added.
