''I CAN NOT RETURN FROM CHP NOW ON''
Kemal Dervis, while speaking to his close friends about his meeting with Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal, pointed out that, ''I can not return from CHP from now on.'' Responding to the questions of his friends who said they saw his face sulky, Dervis said, ''I am pleased. Their programs came to the stage of discussion. It goes well.''
Speaking to his friends following six-hour meeting with Baykal, Dervis said, ''it is okey. It is not possible for me to return from now on.''
With those statements, Dervis put an end to the 48-hour speculations, and thus announced that he would enter elections from the CHP.
Dervis said they discussed the problems of Turkey in 2003, noting that they also discussed economy and solution proposals.
''CARRY OUT THE REFORMS, NEGOTIATION DATE WILL BE SET AFTERWARDS''
Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen of Denmark, the EU term president, who met Mesut Yilmaz, the State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, pointed out that Copenhagen criteria was fulfilled with the reform package, but that it was not possible to say something about the date of negotiations.
Rasmussen said he congratulated the Parliament and the Turkish people for the reform package. Stressing that Yilmaz wanted a negotiation date to be set, Rasmussen said they would wait for implementation of reforms and the progress report of the EU commission to set a date.
Stating that Turkey should fully meet political and economic criteria apart from the reform package, Rasmussen said the package showed that there was political will in Turkey to be close to EU. He said the EU Commission would include reform package in the progress report, yet that Turkey has to fulfill other reforms.

ECEVIT: ''BAYKAL TELLS ME TO COME AND DIE THERE''
Another side which was reflected to the public from meeting of Republican People's Party (CHP) and Kemal Dervis was that they would present a proposal to Prime Minister and DSP leader Ecevit.
It was known that Dervis was insistent on participation of Ecevit and DSP to provide a unity in the left. Dervis earlier reflected that CHP leader Baykal also shared his views and that his call covered YTP and DSP.
Baykal or Dervis, following their talks, were expected to request from Ecevit to contribute, or even pioneer the efforts to launch a joint action in the left. Both Baykal and Dervis had used a style stressing historical personality and importance of Ecevit in the left.
As results of Dervis-Baykal meeting were waited to make a proposal to Ecevit, CHP leader made a call to Prime Minister Ecevit from the tv.
In the call which Baykal made from private tv channel ATV's 20.00 news reports, pointed out that Ecevit disclosed that he would put an end to his political life after elections, noting that, ''Ecevit should make this under the roof of CHP''. Baykal said Ecevit was a part of CHP history, and members of DSP have to gather under the roof of CHP.
Invitation of Baykal to Ecevit was a kind of ''jubilee''. Baykal wanted DSP leader to make his jubilee in CHP.
After Baykal's call, Ecevit said he listened to the call of Baykal and stressed that he found the statement odd.
Ecevit said, ''Baykal tells me to come to CHP and complete the rest of my life in CHP. He tells me to die there. This means Ecevit would lock the doors of DSP and wait to die in CHP. This is neither a call for unity in the left nor a cooperation.''

CEM: FRIENDSHIP WITH DERVIS CONTINUES
New Turkey Party (YTP) leader Ismail Cem said his friendship with Kemal Dervis continued, ''but he made his political preference'' he noted.
When asked whether or not he closed doors to Dervis, Cem said, ''Dervis had said, and I am saying that our friendship continues. However, he made his political preference. We wish it to be beneficial for him.''
Responding a question about Dervis's meeting with Baykal, Cem said, ''I can not say anything about parties and workings of others. We wish success to everybody. We continue on our way seriously. I think we are at a good position for starting. I know that it will progress.''

DERVIS: ''BAYKAL HAS CHANGED''
When Exporters Union criticized CHP leader Deniz Baykal, Dervis said, ''I found him sincere. He has changed.''
Responding to the criticisms against Baykal, Dervis said, ''you evaluate him prejudiced by basing on his past. I found him rather sincere and changed.
Bringing onto agenda the criticisms that YTP leader Ismail Cem insisted on a different formula despite expectations for alliance in the left, and that names close to former President Suleyman Demirel were directed to YTP, Dervis said, ''may be I will not succeed, but we should try this unity.''

HEAVY RAIN PARALYSIS DAILY LIFE IN ISTANBUL
Heavy rain which continues in Istanbul for three days with intervals, made the buildings and the stone pavements collapse. Hundreds of houses and business places were inundated.
The roads turned into lakes, and daily life was paralyzed.
Traffic jam caused long rows in Bogazici and Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridges. Many vehicles were stranded in Mehmet Sevketpasa Viaduct.

DSP CLOSES ITS DOORS
Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said they did not have time to allocate to efforts looking for unity in the left, and turned Dervis's insistence for unity of CHP-DSP-YTP to be nothing.
Ecevit said, ''we have not shown consideration to given time to alliances or accessions so far in workings of election. Now that we don't have time to give such things.'' Ecevit said he did not receive any proposal for an appointment from Dervis or from Baykal.

GREAT MOBILIZATION FOR EU
Foreign Minister Sukru Sina Gurel will bring together representatives of media, non-governmental organizations, and business circles to get a date from the European Union (EU) to start full membership negotiations.
Foreign Minister Gurel will separately meet the representatives in the ministry and call for contribution from them to lobby efforts that will take place in Europe to get a date for negotiations in Copenhagen Summit that will take place at the end of this year.

RAIN FLOODS MANY BUILDINGS IN ISTANBUL, SAMSUN AND KONYA
Torrential rain paralyzed daily life and traffic in Istanbul, Samsun and Konya provinces. It flooded many houses and work places in those cities. Three people died because thunderbolt stroke in Sinop, Samsun and Nigde provinces. A total of 13 houses was evacuated and 63 houses and 121 work places were inundated due to torrential rain in Samsun. Heavy rain all over the country will also continue today.

OKUYAN RESIGNS FROM ANAP
Motherland Party (ANAP) is experiencing difficult days because of the resignations. Yasar Okuyan who had quit Labor and Social Security Ministry resigned from ANAP. Okuyan and ANAP leader Mesut Yilmaz had a meeting which lasted for two and a half hours last week. Okuyan had harshly criticized Yilmaz after the meeting. Okuyan resigned from ANAP due to Yilmaz's statement on job security law. Erkan Mumcu will also resign from ANAP, unless Yilmaz decides to hold an extraordinary congress.

YSK WAITS FOR MONEY
A total of 52 trillion Turkish liras (TL) which Higher Election Board (YSK) will use for the elections has not been sent to the board yet. State Statistics Institute (DIE) did not send the certain results of general census which was held in 2000 to YSK which is continuing to work for the general elections. If DIE does not send the certain results of the census to YSK till August 25, YSK will use the number of deputies in the general election in April 18, 1999.

U.S. PEOPLE LIKE GEMLIK'S OLIVE
Marmara Agriculture Sale Cooperatives Association (Marmarabirlik) Executive Board Chairman Refi Taviloglu said that U.S. people liked the olive raised in Gemlik township of Bursa province. He added that the export of olive which was 150 tons to the United States annually could increase to 500 tons firstly then to 1,000 tons within two years. Tavioglu said that the U.S. people liked very much Gemlik type olive at food fair in New York and added that U.S. food firms said that they could buy great amount of olives if the distribution system was formed.

DPT: ''POSSIBLE IRAQ OPERATION WILL COST USD 5 BILLION TO US''
Economy bureaucrats estimated that United States' possible operation against Iraq will cost 5 billion U.S. dollars to Turkey. According to the report which was prepared by State Planning Organization (DPT), a possible operation against Iraq will affect mostly exportation, tourism and transportation sectors. There will be a 15 percent decrease in tourism incomes. Possible military operation will also directly affect currencies.

BAYKAL AND DERVIS TO DISCUSS PROGRAMME
Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal and former State Minister Kemal Dervis will come together again for the unification works in left. Baykal and Dervis will make programme works to win the elections to be held on November 3. Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit and New Turkey Party (YTP) leader Ismail Cem will be called for the unification in left after the meeting.
