DEMIREL CONGRATULATES CEM AND OZKAN
Former President Suleyman Demirel congratulated Former Foreign Minister Ismail Cem and Former Deputy Prime Minister Husamettin Ozkan on the phone and told them that Turkey needed a new spirit. ''I hope the new formation you have started by taking Mr. Dervis with you to be beneficial for Turkey,'' Demirel said. Demirel had a long telephone conversation with Cem and Ozkan on the phone.

ANKARA TO WOLFOWITZ:''WE DON'T WANT A SURPRISE REGARDING IRAQ''
Ankara told U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz that Turkey didn't want a surprise regarding Iraq. During Wolfowitz's contacts in Turkey, Turkish government officials listed him Turkey's concerns regarding Iraq and told him that Turkey didn't want to face a surprise on this issue. The Turkish side underlined that Turkey and the United States were two close allies and strategic partners and therefore the two countries naturally should be in cooperation. The U.S. side said it would consult with Turkey on the Iraqi issue. Turkish officials also remarked that Turkey would be very negatively affected by a possible U.S. operation against Iraq.

ERBAKAN AND ERDOGAN CAN'T BE DEPUTY
Higher Board of Election (YSK) said that Necmettin Erbakan and Recep Tayyip Erdogan can't be elected as deputies even if they are independent candidates. YSK Chairman Tufan Algan said that if early elections is held, AK Party leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan and former leader of the banned Welfare Party (RP) Necmettin Erbakan can't be elected as deputies. Speaking in the news conference he held in order to explain that the elections can't be held on November 3 as there is not sufficient time, Algan said upon a question that Erbakan is barred from politics for five years. During this period, even if he is independent he can't be elected as a deputy. Without giving the name of Erdogan, Algan said that a person who was convicted under Article 312 of Turkish Penal Code, can't be also elected as deputy following three years after end of his imprisonment.

''WE COULDN'T REACH COMPROMISE WITH TURKEY''
Wolfowitz, the U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense told one of the writers of the paper that ''we couldn't reach compromise with Turkey, as Turkey is against a military intervention in Iraq.'' ''The views of Turkey about Iraq is very important for us. I came here to learn these views of Turkey,'' he said. Noting that there are differences of views between Turkey and the U.S. about the issue, Wolfowitz didn't deny that he came to Turkey to persuade Turkey. He stressed that the U.S. President Bush is determined to stage such an operation to overthrow the Saddam regime in Iraq.

JOIN THE WAR, SIT AT NEGOTIATION TABLE
U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz told Turkish officials that ''Turkey has to give a decision, will it join the operation or not. If it will join, at what stage it will take part?'' He stressed that if Turkey joins the operation in the beginning, it will sit at the negotiation table for formation of the new Iraq. But the situation will be different if Turkey needs to join the operation in case of an attack against Turkish territories, he added.

PARLIAMENT TO CONVENE ON AUGUST 1
When Higher Board of Election (YSK) Chairman Tufan Algan said that if the parliament convenes on August 1 to take a decision of early elections on November 3, elections can't be held on time, coalition leaders took action. Ecevit discussed the issue with his partners Bahceli and Yýlmaz and called Algan. ''The parliament will convene on August 1, firstly the decision of early elections will be taken and then EU adjustment laws will be discussed,'' Ecevit said.

U.S. LEAVES IRAQI ISSUE TO TURKEY
U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz said that it was up to Turkey to join a possible military operation against Iraq, adding that the U.S. administration was aware of the dangers which the foundation of a Kurdish state in Northern Iraq would cause for Turkey. Wolfowitz noted that the U.S. can also give 28 billion dollars to Turkey as this amount is necessary for security systems.

OSS RESULTS TO BE ANNOUNCED
A total of 1,54 million students wait for the announcement of university entrance exams (OSS) today. The candidates will learn the result of the exam as of 10.00 local time from the internet, and by telephones.

DERVIS:''I FAVOUR A BROADER COMPROMISE''
State Minister Kemal Dervis who is from the new formation, holds contacts with different groups and these contacts of him are also known by Ismail Cem and Husamettin Ozkan. Dervis seeks for a broader compromise in the society in line with the ''social-liberal synthesis'' concept. It seems as if the new formation is not very similar to the political model Dervis has in his mind.

THREE MORE RESIGNATIONS
Deputies who try to end the resignations from the Democratic Left Party (DSP) also started to resign from the party. The number of seats DSP has in the parliament decreased to 66 with the resignation of three more deputies from DSP yesterday. The number of seats the government has in the parliament decreased to 272.

PARLIAMENT'S TASK SEEMS DIFFICULT
The political parties have a dispute about the most important issues that will be discussed first following the decision of the coalition parties to hold the early elections on November 3. The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and True Path Party (DYP) want adoption of EU adjustment laws after taking the decision of early elections. The Motherland Party (ANAP) and the Democratic Left Party (DSP) on the other hand defend the view that firstly EU adjustment laws have to be adopted and then the decision to hold early elections should be taken by the parliament.

DEMIREL SAYS ELECTIONS SHOULD BE HELD
Former President Suleyman Demirel said that holding of early elections on November 3 will be to the benefit of everybody, adding that elections are needed for smooth operation of the state organs and for the people. '' Turkish people will write the prescription which will end Turkey's problems by the elections. The only way of ending Turkey's problems is elections,'' Demirel said.

ECIVIT:''WE CAN GATHER PARLIAMENT ON AUGUST 1''
Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said that he could not digest the criticisms against his personality and the government, adding that ''there are certain campaigns carried out against me.'' Ecevit stressed that there is no sufficient time to go to early elections with another government, adding that the parliament has to be called to an extraordinary meeting in the beginning of August to hold the elections on November 3. Speaking in a private tv channel yesterday, Ecevit said that he had fully recovered.
