BAHCELI SAYS DERVIS CAN REMAIN IN POWER
The leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Devlet Bahceli brought flexibility on three important issues on condition that the elections will be held on November 3 with the existing government in power. Bahceli stressed that State Minister Kemal Dervis who is in charge of economy can remain in power as the minister although he said MHP does not approve his dealing with politics as he was a technocrat. Bahceli added that the EU adjustment laws can be adopted by the parliament, noting that the government will stay in power as long as the number of opposition parties reaches 276.

CHINESE TORTURE
The resignations from the Democratic Left Party (DSP) speeded up. Yesterday seven DSP deputies resigned from the party. If there are six more resignations from the party, the government will lose its vote of confidence.
DSP which was the number one party in the parliament with its 128 seats recently became the fourth party in the parliament with 75 seats. Coalition leaders Ecevit, Bahceli and Yýlmaz will discuss today to stay in power or not under these circumstances.

BAHCELI TRANSFERS DERVIS ISSUE TO ECEVIT
Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader and Deputy Prime Minister Devlet Bahceli said he preferred the continuation of the coalition government. But he left the issues regarding the future of Dervis and the decision to withdraw from the government to Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit. Bahceli called the opposition parties to adopt the EU adjustment laws until November 3, 2002. Bahceli also said that the parliament can convene immediately, adding that it was up to Prime Minister Ecevit to decide on the status of State Minister Kemal Dervis.

DERVIS'S BARGAIN WITH U.S.
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Paul Wolfowitz who met with some politicans and businessmen in Istanbul, asked Turkey for support for a possible operation against Iraq. State Minister Kemal Dervis who met with Wolfowitz in the house of Mustafa Koc, a businessman, asked U.S. Deputy Secretary of State for new support to Turkey economically and politically in case of an operation in Iraq.

ECEVIT RESISTS
Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit seems hopeful about the fact that political parties gave different dates for early elections. He told the paper that he didn't want to act in a hurry to give a decision about the date of early elections. The paper says that the target of Ecevit is to delay the elections as much possible and to stay in power.

IRAQ TRAFFIC
U.S. Deputy Secretaries of State and Defense came to Ankara. Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit met with Chief of General Staff Gen. Huseyin Kivrikoglu yesterday. U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz came to Ankara last night from Afghanistan. Wolfowitz who will start his contacts today, will take up the Iraqi operation with Gen. Kivrikoglu and Prime Minister Ecevit. Meanwhile U.S. Under Secretary of State Grossman was also in Turkey yesterday. Grossman, who was the former U.S. ambassador to Turkey, met with State Minister Dervis, State Minister Tayyibe Gulek, Professor Celal Gole, businessman Bulent Eczacibasi and Prof. Dr. Asaf Savas Akat in dinner.

U.S. PRESSURE ON TURKEY ABOUT IRAQ INCREASES
U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense Pul Wolfowitz, U.S. Under Secretary of State Marc Grossman, and U.S. Air Forces Commander Ralston will hold a series of contacts at General Staff, National Defense Ministry and Foreign Ministry today and tomorrow. The U.S. officials who are expected to explain their plans about Iraq, will also make clear the role which U.S. wants Turkey to play about Iraq.

ECEVIT SAYS NO CONCESSIONS CAN BE GIVEN FROM CYPRUS
Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit has said that the EU, in the recent years, was too involved in the Cyprus conflict making it even more complicated. ''This is why a solution that could satisfy both Turkish and Greek Cypriots could not be found yet. Cypriots should be left on their own, this is the main condition to reach a solution on the island,'' he said. Ecevit stressed that TRNC is considered as a part of Turkey's territories. ''We can't give concessions to any state,'' he said.

GAZI CASE ON THE WAY TO ECHR
The sentence given to two policemen in Gazi case which was totally six years and eight months was approved by the Supreme Court of Appeals yesterday. The policemen benefitted from amnesty and they won't be put in prison. The families of those who died during the Gazi incidents decided to apply to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). A total of 17 people died in the fire opened by police in Gazi district of Istanbul between 12-13 March, 1995.

IZGI CALLS PARLIAMENT TO EXTRAORDINARY MEETING ON SEPT. 1
Parliament Speaker Omer Izgi called Parliament for an extraordinary meeting on Sept. 1, 2002 at 15.00 local time upon the request of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP). Izgi evaluated the request of 125 MHP deputies calling for emergency session, and sent his decision to party groups. The parliament will convene on September 1, 2002, Izgi said in his letter. MHP deputies had noted in their petition dated on July 10, 2002 that the general elections had to be held on November 3, 2002 and they called the parliament to convene on Sept. 1 to discuss this issue.

THREE LEADERS SEEM RESOLVED TO STAY IN POWER
Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said that he wanted to see the continuation of the government till the end for effective completition of the reform programme. Deputy Prime Minister Devlet Bahceli said that the 57th government would stay in power until early elections are held. Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz said in his part that his party has never attempted to end the 57th government.

CILLER WANTS TO BECOME PRIME MINISTER
True Path Party (DYP) leader Tansu Ciller who wants to become prime minister in a possible operation in Iraq, claimed that it was her who knew the fight with terrorism the best. Ciller noted that Turkey needed a serious resolution during the operation and she had that resolution.
