HISTORICAL COMPROMISE ON EUROPE IN OPENING OF NEW PRINTING FACILITIES
Politicians reached a compromise to extend support to accession of Turkey to the EU during the opening of the new printing facilities of Dogan Media Group in Germany. Addressing the opening, Dogan Holding Executive Board President Aydýn Dogan called Turkish politicians to open as soon as possible the ways that will connect Turkey to Europe. Dogan also called German leaders to open EU doors to Turkey. Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yýlmaz, True Path Party (DYP) leader Tansu Ciller, AK Party leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan who attended the opening, said they extended full support to this call.
GREENPEACE ACTIVISTS BOARD GREEK TANKER
Greenpeace activists boarded a Greek flagged oil tanker at the Black Sea entrance of Istanbul Strait, protesting the increased oil traffic in the region. The members of the organization boarded the tanker namely ''Crude Dio'' carrying 160,000 tons of oil, from their ship ''Esparanza.'' The activists unfurled a banner that read ''Stop oil industry, clean energy now'' in Turkish and English. Two activists chained themselves to the ship when the tanker halted.

TWO PROBLEMS OF DERVIS
State Minister Kemal Dervis showed the reasons of problem to Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit at the economy summit: 1. Illness of the Prime Minister 2. Copenhagen criteria. Dervis spoke very frankly at the economy summit: ''We do not have any deficiencies technically. There are two reasons of fluctuations. One of these reasons is the illness of the Prime Minister and the other is the Copenhagen criteria which have not fulfilled yet.'' Then, Deputy Prime Minister and Motherland Party (ANAP) leader Mesut Yilmaz proposed Ecevit that ''speculations about Prime Minister's illness can be prevented by a doctor's report which indicates that Prime Minister's health is good.'' Deputy Prime Minister and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahceli said that Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit's health was misused by the opposition and some other circles and noted that some disrespectful campaigns were carried out.

True Path Party (DYP) leader Tansu Ciller promised to extend support unconditionally in order to put into practice Copenhagen criteria rapidly. Justice and Development Party (AK Party) leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, ''let's hurry.''
SOUTH KOREA WANTS COACH GUNES
Friendly and sister country South Korea which has launched initiatives to find a new coach to its national football team has its eyes on Turkish national football team coach Senol Gunes. It has been learned that Gunes, whose contract has not been renewed yet, has been proposed to be the coach of South Korea.

HARMONY DECISION IN ECONOMY SUMMIT
A written statement released by the Prime Ministry Press Center after the economy summit held in Prime Ministry and chaired by Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said that ''the government will attribute importance to working more effectively on EU issue, implementing the economic programme in resolution, holding the elections in the planned time and not giving wrong impression to the public opinion about the harmony and continuation of the coalition government.'' The statement also said that they would focus more on coordination in economy management and to have periodic meetings of ministries and institutions that are related to economy.
FLAG CASE CONCLUDED WITH AMNESTY
A total of 39 members of the People's Democracy Party (HADEP) who were suspects of the case related to lowering the Turkish flag in HADEP Congress, benefitted from the conditional release law. The case which was also shown as an evidence at the closure case against HADEP, was concluded yesterday. Ankara State Security Court (DGM) No. 1 resulted the case related to the incident that took place in HADEP in 1996 by taking it within the scope of amnesty. DGM which took a decision unanimiously after the defense of the suspects, said that as Article 169 of Turkish Penal Code which regulates the crime of helping and abetting a terrorist organization was taken within the scope of amnesty law no. 4616, the case was postponed.

BUREAUCRATS WARN
Leaders of coalition parties decided to ensure coordination in economy administration and increase meetings at the summit held with the participation of economy ministers and bureaucrats. It was learned that State Minister Kemal Dervis and bureaucrats told the government that ''the problem stemmed from political uncertainty, not from them. Economic balances could not be ensured by detective measures.'' The statement released after the meeting confirmed that balances started to be deteriorated as of May, when Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit became ill, and showed the reason of the problems as ''developments which do not have any connection with Turkey and discussions made throughout the country.''
UNITED STATES TO TAKE PULSE
U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz will come to Turkey on July 14. A probable U.S. operation on Iraq, enlargement of place of mission of International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) deployed in Afghanistan, and European Security and Defense Policy (ESDP) are expected to be the issues on the agenda of Wolfowitz. It is noted that Washington D.C. will request logistic support from Ankara. However, the United States can request strengthening of this role. Ankara does not welcome enlargement of the place of ISAF's mission.

NO CONCRETE STEP FROM SUMMIT
Following the four-hour meeting between the economy administration and the coalition party leaders yesterday, certain promises such as ''giving importance to coordination, working more effectively for EU membership and ending fights within the coalition'' were announced. No steps were taken in the economy summit which could overcome the difficulty caused by the political indefiniteness in markets. State Minister Dervis gave the message in the meeting that the problem didn't stem from the economy administration, but from politics. Dervis also explained the negative effects of the increase in interest rates and U.S. dollars on the economic programme.
POLITICAL STORM MONTH: SEPTEMBER
The political power searches excluding Nationalist Movement party (MHP) started with the obstruction to the European Union (EU) process. According to the formula of Motherland Party (ANAP) leader Mesut Yilmaz and Deputy Prime Minister Husamettin Ozkan, Bulent Ecevit will continue to serve as the leader of Democratic Left Party (DSP) but another person from DSP will be prime minister. Prime Minister Ecevit's health condition and MHP's resistance in the death penalty and cultural rights issues strengthened new government searches.

Turkey Chambers and Commodity Exchanges (TOBB) Chairman Rifat Hisarciklioglu and executive board members met with President Ahmet Necdet Sezer and Deputy Prime Ministers Devlet Bahceli and Husamettin Ozkan. TOBB delegation said that everyone should fulfill his duties to overcome the crisis immediately. Sezer said that he has been watching closely the latest developments and added that he did not want to involve in politics during the meeting with TOBB members.
FACTORY IN BURSA TO PRODUCE MEGANE II
Oyak-Renault factory in Bursa became one of the three factories in the world which will produce Megane II automobiles. Renault Chairman Louis Schweitzer said that the facilities in Bursa were the best of Europe and added that they wanted to utilize it in full capacity. A total of 5.5 million sales of Megane II is foreseen in 75 countries under the project developed by 2.1 billion euros investment. Two third of 600 thousand Sedan models which will be produced in Turkey will be exported.

GOVERNMENT TO TAKE PAINS TO ADJUSTMENT FOR ECONOMY
The government and economy bureaucrats discussed the floating which has occurred in economy recently at the economy summit chaired by Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit. Coalition parties' leaders and economy administration convened in Prime Ministry building for economy summit on Thursday. After the summit, determination messages were given to public opinion. A written statement was released after the summit which lasted for about four hours. The statement said, ''We'll work more efficiently on Turkey's adjustment efforts to the EU, implement the economic program faithfully which is the basis of these efforts, have elections in the planned time and have a harmonious coalition government and not to give any wrong images about the continuation of the government.''
