ISTANBUL (A.A) - 03.07.2002 - Members of the environmental organization Greenpeace held a protest at the Bosphorus with a seven meter long dinosaur which represented big oil companies.
A press conference was held at Greenpeace's ship Esperanza, which has been in Istanbul for sometime.
Greenpeace Energy Campaign representative Melda Keskin said that they would set sail to Johannesburg, capital of South African Republic and their journey would last 40-45 days. She said that Greenpeace was asking world's countries to quit using fossil based fuels such as oil and coal and start using renewable energy resources. She stressed that fossil based fuels were constituting threat to world climate, environment and to the straits.
''Oil companies have a total of 992 billion USD turnover every year,'' she said. ''The glaciers are melting, climate changes are threatening the world and valuable ecosystems such as straits and the Mediterranean are facing risks while these big oil companies run their business smoothly.'' Keskin said oil industry should discontinue.
After the press conference, Greenpeace members opened a banner on the ship that said ''Dinosaur oil industry is destroying the world.''
