ANKARA (A.A) - 22.06.2002 - President Ahmet Necdet Sezer sent a message to President Mohammad Khatami of Iran on Saturday after a strong earthquake jolted northwestern Iran.
In his message, President Sezer expressed his profound sorrow over loss of life in the quake disaster.
Stressing that Turkey was ready to do its utmost to help Iran, President Sezer offered his condolences and implored God's strength upon all who are grieving for their beloved ones.
At least 450 people were killed and 1 thousand 500 others were injured when the quake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck shortly before 7:30 local time.
The quake centered near the town of Avaj 100 km southwest of the city of Qazvin. Officials said the toll would probably rise.
RED CRESCENT TO SEND AID TO IRAN
Upon instructions of Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, aid organization Kizilay (Red Crescent) will send humanitarian aid to Iran which was hit by a powerful earthquake.
Prime Minister Ecevit released a message through his spokesman Cem Avci.
