The Turkish national football team will take on Senegal in the World Cup quarter-final. If Turkey win the match, they will qualify for semi-final, and take on Brazil which defeated Britain yesterday.

SURPRISING SIGNAL FROM EU TO TURKEY
Foreign Minister Joseph Piguet of European Union (EU) Term President Spain said, ''we can set a date for beginning of full membership negotiations between Turkey and the EU. However, it depends on Turkey's fulfilling constitutional reforms.'' Meanwhile, Prime Minister Berlusconi of Italy said that he had proposed the EU to set a date for beginning of full membership negotiations with the EU.

FLOOD HITS BLACK SEA REGION
Flood waters triggered by torrential rains inundated houses, business places and cultivated fields in Black Sea region. Hundreds of houses and business places became uninhabitable in northern provinces of Ordu, Giresun, Rize and Artvin. Flood waters also damaged roads, bridges and energy lines in the region. Many bridges collapsed. Meanwhile, 41-year-old Ayse Yuksel who was carried away by flood waters, lost her life in Refaiye village in Ulubey township of Ordu. Financial damage exceeded 9 trillion Turkish liras.

''WE SHOULD MAKE BROADCAST IN KURDISH''
True Path Party (DYP) leader Tansu Ciller has shed green light for broadcasting in Kurdish language. Ciller met with State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz, who also acts as the leader of the Motherland Party (ANAP). She said that a news program could be broadcast on the TRT-INT Channel in Kurdish with subtitles in Turkish.

YAPI KREDI BANKASI ANNOUNCES 896 TRILLION TL OF LOSS
Yapi ve Kredi Bankasi announced that it suffered 895.8 trillion Turkish lira (TL) of loss in 2001. The bank said its assets were 15.4 quadrillion TL and its deposits were 11.7 quadrillion TL.

CAPACITY UTILIZATION INCREASES TO 75.7 PERCENT
Rate of capacity utilization that is weighted by production value, increased from 70.4 percent in May of 2001 to 75.7 percent in May of 2002. The State Institute of Statistics announced results of the monthly tendency survey which reflect view of the establishments in manufacturing industry about production, sales, stocks and prices for the realization in May of 2002 and expectation in June of 2002. Rate of capacity utilization that is weighted by production value, increased from 70.4 to 75.7 percent in May of 2002 from the primarily provisional result of 774 large scale manufacturing industrial establishments.

TURKEY TO PURCHASE STINGER MISSILES
Turkey will purchase stinger missiles and launcher systems. The Wall Street Journal, one of leading dailies in the United States, said that Turkey had signed a contract worth of 34 million U.S. dollars with Raytheon firm. The U.S. Congress approved sale of the stinger missiles to Turkey last month.

TURKEY TO TAKE OVER COMMAND OF KABUL AIRPORT ON JUNE 30
Turkish Air Forces Command will undertake responsibility of all operation rights of an international airport in a foreign country for the first time in its history. Air Forces Command personnel will take over operation of Kabul Airport from Britain on June 30.

There are some claims saying that Pamukbank which was transferred to the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (SDIF), gave bank loans by being aware of the fact that these loans would not be repaid, and the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BRSA) was content with warning Pamukbank. Now, these claims will be searched by the jurists.

VIDEO TAPE SHAKES TURKEY
New video tapes were revealed to be used to denounce the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) led by Recep Tayyip Erdogan. During the speeches he delivered between 1993 and 1995, Erdogan says, ''such an order can produce only panders. We will come to the power to eradicate the idols. Has Turkey become a market of prostitutes since 1924 because of sharia? We are ready to change this order.''

PRIORITY GIVEN TO KURDISH LANGUAGE
Upon positive signals of the European Union (EU), Turkey has given priority to broadcast and education in Kurdish language. True Path Party (DYP) leader Tansu Ciller who held a meeting with State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz, who also acts as the leader of the Motherland Party (ANAP), said that they gave up the pre-condition of 'government will' to reach a solution on the issues of cultural rights and abolishment of death sentence.

EU CAPITAL ALSO WANTS TURKEY
Confederation of European Industrialists and Employers which affects the decisions of the European Union (EU), released a report saying that full membership negotiations with Turkey should start immediately after Turkey fulfilled political criteria.

CALL TO PARLIAMENT
True Path Party (DYP) leader Tansu Ciller made a call saying that the parliament should not recess before urgent bills are not passed. She brought Motherland Party (ANAP) leader and Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz the proposal of parliament's taking up the bills for adjustment with the EU as a whole. Yilmaz supported discussion of bills on education and broadcast in mother tongue and abolition of death sentence as a whole while he opposed to parliament's working also in summer with the pretext that there has not been a complete consensus among the coalition yet.

WE CAN GIVE A DATE TO TURKEY THIS YEAR
The EU Summit started in Sevilla city of Spain yesterday. EU Term President Spain's Foreign Minister Joseph Pique made a statement on the first day of the summit and said that they were quite pleased with the reforms in Turkey, stressing that they hoped they would give a date to Turkey this year for opening of accession talks.

MAKE US HAPPY AGAIN
Turkey will meet Senegal in the quarterfinal today. Everybody is waiting to celebrate a victory against Senegal and expects Umit Davala to score a goal whose header brought Turkey to last 8. Coach Senol Gunes said that none of other seven quarter finalists were powerful than Turkey. ''We are now in the quarter final. The competition continues. We target to reach the semi final,'' Gunes said. If Turkey beat Senegal, they will take on Brazil in the semi final.

''I FEEL LONELY AT PERSIDENTIAL PALACE''
President Ahmet Necdet Sezer who paid a two-day official visit to Iran in the beginning of the week as the guest of his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Khatami faced an interesting incident in Tehran. It was revealed that Iranian citizen Hassan Agai who made the translation during the President's meetings was ex-neighbor of President Sezer. Agai asked the President how his days at the Presidential Palace were, and Sezer said he felt lonely as his children were not staying with him.
