ENTHUSIASM OF TURKEY
Millions of Turkish people took the streets all over Turkey and in different countries with flags in their hands to celebrate historical success of the national soccer team in the World Cup. Turkey beat China 3-0 in its last World Cup group C match, and qualified to the second round. Turkey's first goal came in the sixth minute when Hasan Sas took advantage of a mistake by Chinese defender Li Weifeng on the edge of the box and blasted a right-foot shot over goalkeeper Jiang Jin from inside the area. The second goal came three minutes later after Hasan Sas provided a dangerous cross from the left and defender Bulent Korkmaz's looping header at the far post went over Jiang. Umit Davala made it three five minutes from time. Turkey will play the winners in group H -- Belgium, Japan, Russia or Tunisia -- in the second round on June 18.
''WE INTERVENE IN A POSSIBLE KURDISH STATE''
In an interview with the An-Nahar Newspaper of Lebanon, National Security Council (NSC) Secretary General General Tuncer Kilinc said that Turkey would not participate in a possible military operation against Iraq. ''Strategical position of Turkey about Iraq depends on the future of territorial integrity of Iraq. Meanwhile, Turkey cannot allow foundation of a Kurdish state in Iraq. In that case, Turkey will intervene in that Kurdish state,'' he stressed. Sending messages to the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) and the Felicity Party (SP) without mentioning their names not to exploit the religion for their political purposes, General Kilinc added that the Turkish Armed Forces would never give up its fight against fundamentalism.
SP SUBMITS A DRAFT LAW ENVISAGING BROADCASTING IN MOTHER TONGUE
The Felicity Party (SP) submitted a draft law envisaging broadcasting in mother tongue to the parliament. SP Parliamentary Group Deputy Chairman Omer Vehbi Hatipoglu said, ''the coalition partners had been continuing to argue over issue of the European Union (EU). Their arguments have begun to turn into a third economic crisis. They should give up such discussions, and take concrete steps. In order to pioneer this process, we have decided to submit the draft law envisaging broadcasting in mother tongue to the parliament.''

ONE OF MURDERERS OF OKKAN CAPTURED
A total of 12 members of the terrorist Hezbollah organization were captured in an operation launched in Yenisehir township of eastern province of Erzurum three days ago. Police Chief Ozdemir Gursu said, ''we revealed that one of the detainees was involved in assassination of Gaffar Okkan, the former police chief of Diyarbakir.'' Okkan and five other policemen were killed in an armed attack staged by terrorist Hezbollah organization on January 24, 2001.
DSP DIRECTORS MEET WITH MHP, ANAP AND AK PARTY GROUPS
Democratic Left Party (DSP) Deputy Group Chairman Emrehan Halici said that political parties defending abolishment of death sentence, would prepare a draft bill next week. Together with DSP deputy chairmen Zeki Sezer, Tayfun Icli and Suleyman Yagiz, Halici paid visits to the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), the Motherland Party (ANAP), and the Justice and Development Party groups to abolish death sentence. Halici said that they would also pay visits to the True Path Party (DYP) and the Felicity Party (SP). ''During the meetings, political parties reiterated their views which are already known by public opinion. We saw that the DSP and the AK Party shared the same opinion on abolishment of death sentence. Now, our discussions have concentrated on the method to abolish death sentence: whether we should make a constitutitonal amendment, or submit a draft bill,'' he added.
JCR SECRETARY GENERAL ELLERBE EXPRESSES HIS REGRET OVER MAP SCANDAL
Junior Chamber International (JCI) Secretary General Benny Ellerbe expressed his regret over the map scandal at the 40th JCI European Conference in Istanbul. A Cyprus map was hung on the wall across the stand of the Greek Cypriot side's stand during the conference at Istanbul's Lutfi Kirdar Congress and Exhibition Hall. A sentence is written on this map's northern part, saying, ''Area Inaccessible Because of the Turkish Occupation''. The map was later removed by the officials at the stand. However, a booklet distributed by the Greek Cypriot side's stand officials included the same map. Noting that an undesired and distressing incident occurred during the opening of the conference, Ellerbe said, 'we do not have any intention to put Turkey into trouble. We are exteremy sorry about this incident.''

BRSA CONCLUDES EVALUATION OF BANKS' FINANCIAL ACCOUNTS
The Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BRSA) announced that it had concluded evaluation of banks' financial accounts. Releasing a statement, BRSA said that it had determined that the banks within scope of the economic programme required a total of 1 quadrillion 326 trillion Turkish liras (TL) of capital as of end of 2001. Noting that 1 quadrillion 102 trillion of this requirement had been met by banks, BRSA said that talks with the owners of relevant banks on closing of the remaining 224 trillion TL of gap were under way.

SIXTH INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENT FILMS FESTIVAL ENDS
The Sixth International Environment Films Festival organized by the Turkish Cinema and Audiovisual Culture Foundation (TURSAK) ended. The festival held under the auspices of the Culture Ministry and sponsored by Garanti Bankasi aimed at bringing environment problems onto agenda in a cultural platform, and creating the conscience of environment protection. Meanwhile, ''Sanam'' directed by Rafi Pitts of Iran was presented with the Dionysos Award in the International Long-Feature Film Contest.
FRENCH PARTNER IN BAKU-TBILISI-CEYHAN PIPELINE
Energy and Natural Resources Ministry said that French Totalfinaelf firm would become a partner of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline project. The firm will have a five percent share in the project.

BOSTANCIOGLU ACQUITTED
Parliamentary Investigation Commission which was set up to inquire the allegations against National Education Minister Metin Bostancioglu decided that Bostancioglu should not be tried at the High Tribunal. Commission Chairman Cavit Kavak said that they examined the allegations against Bostancioglu. ''After the assessments, the commission members decided that Bostancioglu 'did not insult anyone or abused his position as a minister, he never implemented arbitrary practices and was not involved in any illegal doing'.'' Justice and Development Party (AK) deputy Irfan Gunduz and other party members had proposed to start a parliamentary investigation against Bostancioglu for allegedly ''abusing his position as a minister, and causing chaos in education through a number of arbitrary and ideological practices.''
TOBB CHAIRMAN HISARCIKLIOGLU MEETS CHAIRMAN OF EUROCHAMBERS LEITL
Euopean Chamber of Industry and Trade Chairman Christoph Leitl said that they would be in an effort to find a formula to facilitate entrance of Turkey to the European Union (EU) by making a program. A delegation led by Leitl, visited Rifat Hisarciklioglu, the Chairman of the Union of Turkish Chambers and Commodity Exchanges (TOBB). Hisarciklioglu said, ''the Eurochambers pledged to expend support to Turkey in getting negotiation calendar during entrance process to the EU.''

The Felicity Party (SP) submitted a draft law envisaging broadcasting in mother tongue to the parliament. The draft was signed by SP Deputy Chairman Mehmet Bekaroglu and five other SP deputies. The draft envisages amendment to Article 4 of the Law on Foundation and Broadcasting of Radio and Television Channels.
RULING PARTIES SAVE BOSTANCIOGLU
Parliamentary Investigation Commission decided not to transfer National Education Minister Metin Bostancioglu to the High Tribunal. True Path Party (DYP) deputy Mehmet Yalcinkaya, one of the commission members, did not attend the voting. Ten members of the commmission who are from ruling parties voted in favor of Bostancioglu while four commission members who are from opposition parties voted against him.
