CILLER: ''WE WILL MISS OPPORTUNITY OF EU BECAUSE OF PRIME MINISTER''
True Path Party (DYP) leader Tansu Ciller said that Turkey would miss the European Union (EU) opportunity due to lack of prime minister. ''Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit has been making our EU full membership process more hard by insisting on withdrawing from his post,'' she added.

HADEP GAINS INTERNATIONAL IDENTITY
As the Constitutional Court has been continuing to hear the closure case against the People's Democracy Party (HADEP), the party has gained an international identity. The Socialists International (SE), the most important organization of the leftist political parties in the world, accepted HADEP's application for membership during its meeting in Morocco between May 31 and June 1. HADEP leader Murat Bozlak was in attendance at the meeting.

TEN MILLION PEOPLE LIVE WITH LESS THAN 1 USD
A report prepared by non-governmental organizations, revealed that 15 percent of Turkey's population could not spend even 1 U.S. dollar a day to buy food. The report also revealed that rate of malnutrution is extremely
high in Turkey. While consumption of meat per person is 27 kg in Turkey, this amount is 87 kg in member countries to the European Union (EU).

700 SCIENTIST DUE IN KONYA
Nearly 700 scientists from different countries will come to central province of Konya in September of 2002 to attend the 16th International Chemistry Congress. The Selcuk University will host this year's congress. Dr. Huseyin Kara from the Selcuk University Department of Chemistry said that latest developments both in Turkey and the world would be taken up at the
three-day congress. He added that the congress would make a valuable contribution to promote scientific works in Turkey.

POLITICAL DISCUSSIONS HIT MARKETS
Recent political crisis has begun to affect economy negatively. Discussions over abolishment of death sentence cause price of one U.S. dollar to rise to 1 million 556 thousand Turkish liras, and interest rates to claim to 77 percent.

DECISION TO BE TAKEN ON JUNE 27
Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit will undergo a detailed check-up on June 27. Doctors will examine results of the tests, and decide whether Ecevit can return to the Prime Ministry Office or not.

GENERAL YALMAN: ''THERE ARE 1 MILLION ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS''
Gendarme Forces Commander General Aytac Yalman said that Turkey had launched a series of operations within the framework of fight against illegal migration. Speaking at a press conference held on the occasion of the 156th anniversary of foundation of Gendarme Command, General Yalman said, ''there are 1 million illegal immigrants in Turkey. 92 thousand foreigners who had entered Turkey illegally, were captured last year.''

YILMAZ: ''TURKEY IS SENSITIVE ABOUT TERRORISM''
State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz, the leader of the Motherland Party (ANAP), said that they expected the European Union to make a
clear statement about Turkey's membership following the summit meeting in Sevilla, and stressed that Turkey could accept Copenhagen criteria as the only condition. ''We cannot accept any connection between the Cyprus question and Turkey's EU full membership. During my contacts in EU Term President Spain, I stressed that we are different from other candidate countries because of sensitivity in the public opinion stemming from long-standing terrorism in Turkey,'' he added.

DERVIS WARNS LEADERS
State Minister Kemal Dervis for Economy expressed his concerns about recent atmosphere of uncertainty which started with Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit's illness and increased with arguments among coalition partners over
the issue of the European Union (EU) membership. He said, ''recent developments have created an atmosphere of uncertainty in Turkey. If this
uncertainty lasts long, it can cause serious difficulties.''

''NOT BAHCELI, BUT CILLER PUTS TURKEYS INTO TROUBLE''
Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said in a written statement, ''not State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Devlet Bahceli who also acts as leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), but True Path Party (DYP) leader Tansu Ciller has been putting Turkey into trouble.'' Earlier, Ciller said that the DYP could only support abolishment of death sentence in return for a series
of conditions.

CYPRUS SCANDAL
The 40th traditional European conference of the Association of International Young Entrepreneurs (JCI) started with ''Cyprus scandal'' at the Lutfi Kirdar Congress and Exhibition Hall in Istanbul. A Cyprus map was hung on the wall across the stand of the Greek Cypriot side. However, a sentence is written on this map's northern part, saying, ''Area Inaccessible Because of the Turkish Occupation''. The map was later removed by the officials at the stand. However, a booklet distributed by the Greek Cypriot side's stand officials included the same map. Besides, the introduction part of a book titled: ''Cuprus: On The Way to EU Membership'' included a map and there was this sentence on the northern part of the island: ''Area Under The Military Occupation of Turkey''.

ECEVIT: ''THESE CONDITIONS ARE NOT REALISTIC''
Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said that the conditions put forward by True Path Party (DYP) leader Tansu Ciller to support abolishment of death sentence were not realistic. ''Ciller wants abolishment of death sentence to be a bill of the government. However, it is clear that there is not a consensus of opinion among coalition partners. If Turkey's European Union (EU) full membership is jeopardized, Ciller will be responsible,'' he said. Noting that the Felicity Party (SP) and the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) had also put forward some conditions, Prime Minister Ecevit said, ''but they could be overcome through dialogue. Ciller holds the key. We have to set up
dialogue. I will call her.''

BAHCELI: ''THERE IS NOT A VACUUM IN THE GOVERNMENT''
State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Devlet Bahceli, who also acts as leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), said that Turkey's commitments to the European Union (EU) would be debated at the parliament and necessary decisions would be taken. Bahceli accused opposition parties of trying to bring a false government crisis onto Turkey's agenda. Bahceli stressed that Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit had been at his post, and there had not been a vacuum in the government.

TENSION ESCALATES IN MARKETS
Recent political tension has also hit markets in Turkey. Price of one U.S. dollar increased 48 thousand Turkish liras (TL) to 1 million 556 TL. Interest rates exceeded 77 percent. A foreign banker told the newspaper that foreign investors would not return to Turkey as long as political and economic uncertainty continued.

UNCERTAINY CREATES PANIC
State Minister Kemal Dervis for Economy reacted to raw between the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and the Motherland Party (ANAP). He said, ''recent political developments have caused a stagnation and uncertainty.
If this uncertainty lasts long, a serious problem will emerge in balances in Turkey. The uncertainty can give rise to pessimism in long term. In that case, we can face worse results.''

CILLER: ''THE REAL RESPONSIBLE IS ECEVIT''
True Path Party (DYP) leader Tansu Ciller responded to criticisms of Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit against herself. She said, ''in 1970s, Ecevit, as the head of government, missed the opportunity of the European Union (EU). Now, we will miss this opportunty because Ecevit cannot fulfill his duty. Prime Minister Ecevit has been making Turkey's EU full membership process
more difficult by insisting on stepping down.'' She stressed that the government failed to display a joint policy and attitude on a vital issue
like the EU membership.

IS THERE ANOTHER POSSIBILITY?

TORRENTIAL RAINS CAUSE FLOOD IN BARTIN
Torrential rains caused flood in northern province of Bartin. 18 villages located between Cavus village and Akmanlar village cannot be reached by highway. Meanwhile, electricitiy cannot be given to 54 villages in the province as heavy rains also damage energy lines.

Felicity Party (SP) deputy leader Mehmet Bekaroglu said at a press conference that they would support the motion submitted to the parliament by five deputies of the Democratic Left Party (DSP) for abolishment of death sentence.

TURK: ''AK PARTY'S CONDITIONS ARE NOT REASONABLE''
Justice Minister Hikmet Sami Turk said that the conditions put forward by the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) to support abolishment of death
sentence, were unnecessary and extremely difficult to achieve.
