GUREL SAYS THOSE WHO SAY EU TRAIN MISSED DECEIVE SOCIETY
State Minister and Government Spokesman Sukru Sina Gurel said that the fundamental goal of the government was to realize 35 percent inflation target by the end of the year, and to reach 3 percent growth rate.
Speaking to reporters following the Council of Ministers meeting which took place under the leadership of State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Devlet Bahceli, Gurel said, ''the works which have been carried out so far, and the datum show that we can reach those targets by the end of the year.''
Gurel said, ''at the beginning of the meeting today, Bahceli stated that this meeting took place upon the directive of Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit,'' and noted that Bahceli expressed pleasure over the statement of Ecevit that was made during the news conference held on Sunday.

MARKETS ARE MORE OPTIMISTIC IN INFLATION TARGET
In the expectation inquiry, which Central Bank made periodically, the expectation for inflation for the end of year was revealed below the target of the government, that was 35 percent.
Markets expect Consumer Prices Index (CPI) to be realized as 34.5 percent by the end of the year.
The expectation in inflation for the end of year decreased below 35 percent, which was the expectation of the government.
Also, the decrease pertaining to inflation expectations in the coming 12 months, also continued.

ANOTHER RAPIST IS RELEASED BY MISTAKE
Cemal Aydin, who had been sentenced to life in prison on charges of raping an 8-year old child on November 23, 1994 and killing the child in the Black Sea Sinop province, was released by mistake after benefiting from conditional release.
The mistake was revealed when Aydin raped another child after being released.
Aydin had applied to Sinop Heavy Criminal Court after amnesty was issued. The court rejected the demand. However, Aydin again applied the court after Constitutional Court annuled some provisions of the law on conditional release to prevent any legal vacuum. Aydin this time again applied the court and was released.

DEATH SENTENCE VISA FROM BAHCELI
Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, who talked to the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahceli on the phone, said they would start to make some inquires with the other parties to lift death sentence.
The difficulty on death penalty had increased when Devlet Bahceli, the MHP leader, said, ''our coalition partners can lift death sentence with the support of the opposition. However, we will withdraw or support searches for a new government if this turns into a habit.''
Ecevit who had a news conference on Sunday, said Bahceli earlier gave permission for the removal of death sentence with the support of opposition, and stressed that this would not constitute a problem.

YILMAZ: THOSE WHO ARE NOT VOLUNTARY FOR EU USE CYPRUS AS PRETEXT
State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz, who also acts as the leader of the Motherland Party (ANAP), said Cyprus was not a pre-conditon for the European Union (EU), stressing that death penalty and the mother tongue were the necessary conditions.
Yilmaz said, ''in case any disagreement occurs, the new government that would be set up, should be indexed to the EU.
Responding to the questions in private NTV television about EU process, Yilmaz said Cyprus issue was only considered under political dialogue in Accesson Partnership Document. Yilmaz said, ''what they expect from Turkey is to contribute to the negotiations held on the Island. Cyprus issue is not a condition with respect to Turkey-EU relations.''
Yilmaz said Turkey should first of all fulfill its commitments to make the EU show understanding.

THERE IS NO CLEAN SEA IN ISTANBUL
Istanbul Municipality announced that quality of water increased in the Straits thanks to the purification installations, but Turkey Sea Searches Foundation Ozturk opposed to this view.
Ozturk said although the sea water was found clean in some places, there was not any place in Istanbul to swim. Ozturk said especially the Anatolian side was a disaster.

SEZER DUE TO IRAN
President Ahmet Necdet Sezer will leave for Iran on June 17 as the official guest of President Mohammad Khatami of Iran.
Sources told the A.A correspondent on Monday that President Sezer would pay an official visit to Iran between June 17 and 18, 2002 as guest of his Iranian counterpart Khatami.
State Minister Mehmet Kececiler who is also acting as the chairman of Turkey-Iran Joint Economic Commission, will accompany President Sezer during his visit to Iran.
During President Sezer's contacts in Iran, bilateral relations, regional and international issues will be taken up.

CENTRAL BANK WARNS
Economy and elections were discussed during the Council of Ministers meeting which convened after a long time. Central Bank Governor Sureyya Serdengecti said, ''election means new government. Political uncertainity may give damage.''
Serdengecti said, ''whether or not there are elections, policies of Central Bank will not change. The datum we have indicate that targets for inflation and growth will be realized. Any uncertainity in this sense will negatively effect economy.''

MHP PLEASED OVER STATEMENTS OF ECEVIT
Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) welcomed the statements of Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit pertaining to the future of the government. MHP Acting Group Chairman Sandir said, ''If Ecevit says the government will continue, this is right. We will think about the issue of mother tongue when it comes to the parliament.''
Sandir said they would not turn abolishment of death penalty with the opposition a government problem.

DERVIS SHOCK
Statements of State Minister Kemal Dervis, which were made on Sunday, put its seal on the markets on the first day of the week. IMKB-100 reduced at the opening, the U.S. dollars and rate of interests increased. Experts said situation of Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit and the statements of Kemal Dervis turned everything upside down.
Dervis had said, ''the problem of debt continues. I can not claim that the situation is perfect at the moment. There is a splitted administration and a bureaucracy which is in vicious circle.''

CABINET WITHOUT ECEVIT
The cabinet, which could not convene for six weeks, convened on Monday without Premier Bulent Ecevit and with an agenda where economy was discussed. Ecevit did not give ''proxy'' to Devlet Bahceli, but requested him to head the Cabinet meeting. State Minister Sukru Sina Gurel, who responded to the questions which asked if convening without prime minister and proxy was appropriate, pointed out that, ''prime minister orders, and we convene.''

DISCUSSION ON EARLY ELECTIONS SPREADS TO COUNCIL OF MINISTERS
Council of Ministers discussed how early elections would effect economy. Central Bank Governor Sureyya Serdengecti, on the contrary to State Minister Kemal Dervis for Economy, said early elections would negatively effect economy.
Dervis had said early elections would not have a negative effect on economy.
Serdengecti said, ''as the Central Bank, we don't have a growth target. However, we have estimations pertaining to growth. We think growth can be postponed to reduce inflation and to protect small inflation figures.''

SEZER: I AM HOPEFUL FROM THE GOVERNMENT ON EU ISSUE
President Ahmet Necdet Sezer said he was hopeful from the government to take necessary steps to start full membership negotiations with the European Union (EU).
Sezer, who received administrators of newly founded Social Democrat Peoples Party (SHP), spoke about the EU and the politics.
Sezer said the agreement reached in the summit held on June 7, would be carried out in the Parliament. Sezer said he and government partners Democratic Left Party (DSP) and the Motherland Party (ANAP) have similar views regarding abolishment of the death stence with a legal arrangement. Sezer said the agreement reached in the summit would be implemented in the parliament.
