D-8 Meeting Starts In Cairo

CAIRO (A.A) - 07.06.2002 - The 11th meeting of the Developing Countries Economic Cooperation Group (D-8) started in Egyptian capital Cairo on Friday.
D-8 Secretary General Ayhan Kamel, Foreign Affairs Ministry Deputy Undersecretary Alev Kilic, Ambassador Yalcinkaya Erensoy and expert Banu Cankan are representing Turkey at the meeting.
Besides Turkey, Pakistan, Nigeria, Malaysia, Iran, Indenosia, Egypt and Bangladesh are being represented at the meeting.
Following the ''Conference on Cooperation for Development'' on October 22, 1996, and after a series of preparatory meetings the establishment of D-8 was announced officially by the Summit of heads of state and government in Istanbul on June 15, 1997.
The objectives of D-8 are to improve developing countries' positions in the world economy, diversify and create new opportunities in trade relations, enhance participation in decision-making at the international level, and provide better standards of living.
Egypt will hand over D-8 term presidency to Indonesia in 2003.
