BRUSSELS (A.A) - 06.06.2002 - NATO defense ministers meeting began in Brussels on Thursday.
National Defense Minister Sabahattin Cakmakoglu is representing Turkey at the meeting which will last for two days.
Measures to be taken by the Alliance against new threats in the 21st century is the prior item of the agenda of the meeting.
The participants will take up ''fight against terrorism and measures to be taken against proliferation of mass destructive weapons'' at the meeting.
Concrete results about these issues are expected to come out of the Prague Summit to be held on November 21-22.
Defense ministers are working on a document to be ratified by the heads of state and government in Prague.
NATO continues its searches to adopt its military capabilities on ''new threats.'' NATO Secretary General George Robertson is making statements on the necessity of ''modernization'' and ''renewal'' of the Alliance especially after the September 11th terrorist attacks.
NATO is also exerting efforts to set its ''military approach'' towards fight against terrorism within the framework of a document. The document which is planned to be made concrete till the Prague Summit is expected to cover attitude and measures against terrorist threats ''outside the field of defense.''
Defense ministers will also take up Indian-Pakistani tension, the Balkans, and NATO-Russia relations.
