Gunes: A Referee Couldn't Have Been Much Worse

ULSAN, South Korea (A.A) - 03.06.2002 - Turkish National Team's coach Senol Gunes said on Monday that they got a controversial defeat against Brazil due to the referee's performance, stressing, ''a referee could not have been much worse. He changed the course of the game.''
''My players did what I had told them to do throughout the game. And we led 1-0 at the first half. However, we lost the game due to the referee's performance, a penalty which was given after an offence outside the box and two red cards. Our aim was to draw with Brazil. And we could have achieved it but we could not overcome the referee's performance,'' Gunes said.
''We have two games left. And these games are more important. We will try to get six points,'' he said.
''We came here with pride and we played the match with pride. We had a great effort but we could not get what we deserved. The result was an injustice. In the first half, we played well but we gave them several opportunities. I thought we controlled the game in the second half but the referee was something that was out of our control. We deserved one point but we could not do anything against the referee's biased whistles,'' Gunes added.
