TRABZON (A.A) - 30.05.2002 - Belgian Ambassador to Turkey Jan Matthyssen said on Thursday that Belgium extended support to Turkey's joining the European Union (EU).
Matthyssen visited Trabzon Governor Adil Yazar with a delegation including Turkish Trade Attache to Belgium Aydin Bilginer the same day.
Noting that there are 300,000 Turks living in Belgium, Matthyssen said that there are positive developments between Turkey and Belgium. ''We extend support to Turkey's joining the EU,'' he said.
Matthyssen said that he will suggest Belgian tourists to come to northern Trabzon province and the surrounding.
Governor Yazar said in his part that there were consulate generals of 14 countries in Trabzon in the past, adding that the number decreased to four.
Noting that Trabzon was an important trade centre in the past, Yazar said that ''there are also developments in Trabzon recently in respect of tourism. Totally one million tourists including 350,000 foreigners came to Trabzon last year.''
Belgian Trade Attache Aydin Bilginer said in his part that they want to develop commercial, cultural relations between the two countries.
