Bahceli: Coalition Partners Are In Favor Of Holding Elections On Time

NIGDE (A.A) - 23.05.2002 - State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Devlet Bahceli, the leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), said on Thursday, ''a certain date was not put forward at Tuesday's summit meeting among leaders of three political parties forming the coalition government for the general elections. Coalition partners are in favor of holding the general elections on time.''
Bahceli paid a visit to Bor township of central province of Nigde.
Responding a question abut President Ahmet Necdet Sezer's applying to the Constitutional Court for annulment of some articles of the Law on Conditional Release from Prison and Suspension of Punishments, Bahceli said, ''I do not have enough information. The Constitutional Court will take the decision on the issue. It is not correct to say something at this point.''
When asked whether or not a certain date was put forward during the summit meeting among coalition partners, Bahceli said, ''a certain date was not put forward at Tuesday's summit meeting among leaders of three political parties forming the coalition government for the general elections. However, it was proposed to hold the elections in October of 2002. Coalition partners are in favor of holding the general elections on time.''
''Turkey has been working to overcome economic crisis. The 57th government has been implementing a serious economic programme to decrease impacts of the economic crisis on the society to the minimum. During such a period, it is meaningless to request to hold early elections.''
