RAHSAN ECEVIT'S HEIR: CAGAN
Earlier, Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said in an interview with the Hurriyet about leadership of the Democratic Left Party (DSP), ''some of our friends could not have the opportunity to introduce themselves. We want to give them a chance.'' Later, an argument has begun about these people. According to members of the DSP, Forestry Minister Prof. Dr. Nami Cagan who is known with its close relations with Rahsan Ecevit, the wife of Prime Minister Ecevit, could be leader of the DSP.

ECONOMIC CRISIS COST TURKEY 55.5 BILLION U.S. DOLLARS
The cost of 2001's economic crisis has become clear. Turkey was ranked forth in the list of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Turkey lost 55.5 billion U.S. dollars from its gross national domestic product (GNDP).

WORLD BANK DELEGATIONS DUE IN TURKEY
World Bank agriculture and finance sectors delegations will come to Turkey next week, to review the developments in these sectors.

BAHCELI PROTESTED
State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Devlet Bahceli, the leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), visited the military museum within the framework of his visit to Austrian capital Vienna. Meanwhile, members of some extreme leftist organizations held a demonstration in front of the hall in which Austria-Turkey Federation Congress was held. The demonstrators carrying placards in their hands, chanted slogans and criticized Bahceli.

TREASURY TO REPAY USD 755.7 MILLION OF EXTERNAL DEBT THIS WEEK
Treasury will repay 755.7 million U.S. dollars of external debt this week. According to the Treasury Undersecretariat statistics, Treasury will repay 421 million U.S. dollars on Monday, 19.8 million U.S. dollars on Tuesday, 4.6 million U.S. dollars on Wednesday, 57 million U.S. dollars on Thursday and 253.2 million U.S. dollars on Friday. Treasury has repaid 3 billion 228.1 million U.S. dollars of external debt so far since the beginning of the year 2002.

THREE EARTHQUAKES JOLT IZMIR
Three earthquakes jolted western province of Izmir yesterday. First earthquake measuring 3 on the Richter scale occurred at 05:12 a.m. It was centered on Bergama township of Izmir. Later, two earthquakes measuring 4.1 and 3.6 on the Richter scale followed the first shock at 13:46 p.m. and 14:07 p.m. There were not any immediate reports of casualties or financial damages, however the earthquakes caused panic among residents.

PAMUK'S BOOK TRANSLATED INTO KURDISH
Prominent writer Orhan Pamuk's book entitled ''My Name is Red'' was translated into Kurdish. The book was put up for sale in Europe last week. Pamuk will attend the Culture and Art Festival in southeastern province of Diyarbakir next week. The book was translated into Kurdish by Mustafa Aydogan, and published by Nefel Publishing House.

CORRUPTION FIRM ANAP
Motherland Party (ANAP) deputy chairman Erkan Mumcu spoke at Bilkent Hotel on the occasion of 19th anniersary of the establishment of ANAP on Sunday. Mumcu pointing out that ANAP seemed as a company together with corruptions said that serious measures should be taken. Mumcu stated that instable and ambigious atmosphere which began after Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit's illness costed Turkey millions of dollars.

DIFFERENT PRICE IN EVERY STATE HOSPITAL
The government which allocated the social state expenditures to interest payments is being prepared to take another step for the privatization of health services. The draft prepared by Health Ministry foresees that patients will be charged with health services in hospitals after 4.00 p.m. and also provides state hospitals to take services from private hospitals.

MAY 19 COMMEMORATION OF ATATURK, YOUTH AND SPORTS DAY
May 19 Commemoration of Ataturk, Youth and Sports Day is celebrated throughout the country with ceremonies. Celebrations started with a state ceremony in Anitkabir, the Mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the Founder of Modern Turkish Republic. President Sezer wrote on the Anitkabir Special Notebook. Sezer wrote, ''we will continue to exert efforts to make Turkish Republic, which you founded by integrating with our nation, to reach universal dimensions, and become one of the esteemed member of the contemporary world.'' Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit could not attend the ceremonies due to his health condition, and State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Devlet Bahceli, who is abroad, also did not attend attend the celebrations. Many students and teachers also attended the ceremony.

FOREIGNERS ARE DELIBERATE
Bank of New York, one of the biggest banks of the United States, Turkey representative Neslihan Tombul said that Turkish banks' taking loan from abroad got more difficult after economic crisis in Turkey. She stated that everybody had many bad habits in imaginary world in 10 years and added that working unfruitfully and not attributing importance to the competition power were among the bad habits. Tombul also stated that both banks and also companies as well as all sectors shrank during economic crisis.

THIS IS THE LIMIT
Only workers and civil servants pay 48 Turkish lira (TL) of every 100 TL tax which the state takes. Turkey remains standing with the taxes which workers and civil servants pay. While important businessmen cannot enter the record-breaker list of tax payment, it is revealed that 48 TL of every 100 TL tax has been taken from the workers and civil servants between 1992 and 2001. Workers and civil servants paid taxes worth of 59 billion 383 million U.S. dollars to the state in 10 years.

ECEVIT IS READY FOR SUMMIT
Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit on Sunday hailed the members of his party, who gathered in front of Baskent University hospital, from the window of the hospital where he receives medical treatment. The party members, carrying placards ''no concession from honesty. We love you'' and ''we always support you'', came in front of the hospital. Upon the applause of the party members, Ecevit came to near the window of the hospital together with his wife Rahsan and hailed them. Five members of the party later entered the hospital and conveyed ''get well soon'' messages of the party. Felicity Party (SP) leader Recai Kutan visited Ecevit. Doctors said Ecevit was in good health condition.

LAVASANI SEND A BUNCH OF FLOWERS TO ECEVIT
Hesamoddin Rafiee, the First Secretary of Iranian Embassy in Ankara, paid a visit to Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit who has been receiving medical treatment in Ankara's Baskent Hospital. During the visit, Rafiee conveyed Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Lavasani's best wishes to Prime Minister Ecevit. Rafiee also gave a bunch of flowers to Prime Minister Ecevit on behalf of Lavasani.
